A Wonderful Book,

This review is from: After the Darkest Hour the Sun Will Shine Again: A Parent's Guide to Coping with the Loss of a Child (Paperback)
I have been searching every where for a book that explained the way that I am feeling. After losing my 24 year old son 2 months ago I felt like I was the only person who had ever experienced what I was feeling. Although the pain does not go away there is comfort in knowing that others are going through the same pain and that what you are experiencing is not unusual. It is a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone who has lost a child no matter what their age.

Actually, I read this book as soon as it hit the bookstores. The stories she told expressed the same feelings I have felt since the loss of my 20 year old son. I wish everyone would read a book like this to know how we feel. I did find a book that does that. When Your Friend's Child Dies by Julane Grant lets your friends know in a short, easy to understand, little book that your heartbreak will go on for years (forever, really)and that you want your child remembered and talked about. Buy several and give them to family and friends as gifts. Read After the Darkest Hour for yourself and let your friends read When Your Friend's Child Dies. However, I found myself at the turn of every page in When Your Friend's Child Dies. Like, how we now consider time - before or after the death of our child. Reading grief books, in general, gives us a ligitimate reason to cry and to remember.

This book has many different stories of parents struggling to go on after losing a child. I lost a 17-yr-old this year in a car accident and, with that death, I have felt separated from the everyday lives of my friends. I might as well be living on another planet. The stories in this book help me remember that my experience is not unique and, unfortunately, will be repeated by others. There is consolation in knowing that parents do survive this loss and that we still would not have missed being part of our children's lives even if it means going on without them now.
