5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
I have been searching every where for a book that explained the way that I am feeling. After losing my 24 year old son 2 months ago I felt like I was the only person who had ever experienced what I was feeling. Although the pain does not go away there is comfort in knowing that others are going through the same pain and that what you are experiencing is not unusual...

2.0 out of 5 stars Rambling, Hard-to-Follow Book Only Minimally Helpful
This book was not very helpful in coping with the loss of my child, who died recently from cancer at the age of four. (Brain tumor) The book rambles and jerks from scene to scene, taking you to different losses of children from around the world and throughout time. It actually made me more sad. The foreword by Rabbi Harold Kushner was more helpful. I would not recommend...

4.0 out of 5 stars It captured my feelings., September 21, 1999

This review is from: After the Darkest Hour the Sun Will Shine Again: A Parent's Guide to Coping with the Loss of a Child (Paperback)
Actually, I read this book as soon as it hit the bookstores. The stories she told expressed the same feelings I have felt since the loss of my 20 year old son. I wish everyone would read a book like this to know how we feel. I did find a book that does that. When Your Friend's Child Dies by Julane Grant lets your friends know in a short, easy to understand, little book that your heartbreak will go on for years (forever, really)and that you want your child remembered and talked about. Buy several and give them to family and friends as gifts. Read After the Darkest Hour for yourself and let your friends read When Your Friend's Child Dies. However, I found myself at the turn of every page in When Your Friend's Child Dies. Like, how we now consider time - before or after the death of our child. Reading grief books, in general, gives us a ligitimate reason to cry and to remember.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has been a great comfort after my son died., November 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: After the Darkest Hour the Sun Will Shine Again: A Parent's Guide to Coping with the Loss of a Child (Paperback)
This book has many different stories of parents struggling to go on after losing a child. I lost a 17-yr-old this year in a car accident and, with that death, I have felt separated from the everyday lives of my friends. I might as well be living on another planet. The stories in this book help me remember that my experience is not unique and, unfortunately, will be repeated by others. There is consolation in knowing that parents do survive this loss and that we still would not have missed being part of our children's lives even if it means going on without them now.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book moved me to grieve for the loss of our son., October 15, 1998

We lost our son seven months ago and I didn't know how to cope with such a painful experience. Reading this book let me know I wasn't alone in my grief and I had a way to express my anger, regret, sorrow and the heaviness I felt in my heart. "After the Darkest Hour..." gives a greiving parent the outlet they are searching for. I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost a child, be it at child birth to the age of 60. This book proves age doesn't matter, the loss of child is always painful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source, July 16, 2000
This review is from: After the Darkest Hour the Sun Will Shine Again: A Parent's Guide to Coping with the Loss of a Child (Paperback)
Elizabeth has captured so much in this poignant book of help for when a child has died. Bereaved parents can fully relate to the feelings of sorrow and despair and yet gain comfort from knowing that others have continued to live on in spite of the 'worst loss'. This is a book all bereaved parents should own. The chapters are short, the writing style easy to read and the pages packed with hope.

My aunt sent this book to my husband and I following the death of our four month old daughter.I didn't think that anything or anyone could help me, but reading this book made me realize that I am not the only one who has lost a little angel. Hearing how others grieve has helped me with the overwhelming thoughts and feelings I experience everyday....

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful to any parent who has lost a child, May 16, 2003

I think that this is one of the best bereavement books I have ever read. No matter what the conditions were of your childs' death, you will find yourself in this book. This book drives home that we may be thrown into a different world when our child dies, but we bereaved parents all share many common similarities in feelings and thoughts. This book helps a bereaved parent realize that they are not alone in their grief; the emotions they are feeling are 'normal'. I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost a child and any family member or friend who knows someone who has lost a child.

I work with mothers who have experienced a fetal or infant loss and am always looking for material to help them. This is a book that I can highly recommend. It helps to explain that it doesn't matter what age your child was when they died - a loss is a loss!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book which touched my broken heart, May 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: After the Darkest Hour the Sun Will Shine Again: A Parent's Guide to Coping with the Loss of a Child (Paperback)
I have been searching for the perfect book on dealing with the loss of a child since my son died six years ago. I found myself reaching towards childrens books, they were much easier to handle, and felt if I wanted a book to capture my feelings I would have to write it myself. Not anymore, this book has made me realize I am not alone in my loss. Thank you Elizabeth Mehren.
