Book Description

May 22, 2008 I Can Read, Level 2

Read about the largest mammal ever to walk on land, about a tiger with teeth longer than your hand, and about a horse the size of a dog!

Mammals -- some strange and some strangely familiar -- ruled the earth after the dinosaurs. These compelling creatures are introduced to beginning readers by the team who created The Day the Dinosaurs Died. Paleontologist Charlotte Lewis Brown's easy-to-read and fascinating descriptions of these ancient animals are brought to life in Phil Wilson's detailed illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3—This title examines a variety of ancient mammals. It opens with a brief introduction, followed by a spread devoted to each animal. The creatures are compared to things that readers will recognize (e.g., "size of a small dog"). The pronunciation guide is a welcome feature. The finely detailed watercolor illustrations emphasize the unusual features of each species. This title is more substantive than Helen Frost's Woolly Mammoth (Capstone, 2005) as it focuses on more than one ancient animal in more complex sentences. Add this book if your students are addicted to prehistory.—Christine Markley, Washington Elementary School, Barto, PA
