4.0 out of 5 stars After Earth - Original Score May 28, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
Composer James Newton Howard is always reliable - that's why he's one of the most well-known and prolific film composers working today. He has collaborated with director M. Night Shyamalan many times now, and his score is often one of the most memorable aspects of those films (his music certainly elevated "The Village" and "The Last Airbender"). Overall, I think "After Earth" is another successful soundtrack.

For a large portion of the movie, the young character Kitai is on his own - and there are many threats. The soundtrack reflects the many dangers he faces - much of the music has a suspenseful and menacing tone. Some of the action-heavy music is very interesting to listen to, and I'd imagine the music works even better within the film. After working on films like "The Bourne Legacy" and "Snow White and the Huntsman", James Newton Howard is quite experienced when it comes to scoring action movies like this.

There are some slower and more emotional tracks as well, but even those are quite suspenseful and the effect is that the whole album leaves the listener on edge. I know a lot of people prefer more pleasant melodies - and this soundtrack falls a bit short in that area.

The music sounds completely appropriate for the environment in which the film takes place. This may be Earth, but it's not the Earth you know. There's an element of discovery to it all; you never know what will be around the next corner.

FAVORITE TRACKS:
[26] Ghosting
[28] After Earth

And here are links to some of my favorite James Newton Howard soundtracks:
King Kong
The Village
The Dark Knight - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Standard Version)

The music flows so brilliantly and takes you back to the beautiful scenes of Costa Rica where most of the movie was filmed.

The booklet in the album is a small picture book of AFTER EARTH pictures. On the CD and in the CD case has some nice pictures of Jaden/Kitai.

It is a collector's item.

Favorite songs:
#2 - I'm Not Advancing You
#3 - Pack Your Bags
#4 - Leaving Nova Prime
#7 - Kitai Finds Cypher
#17 - Safety In The Hog Hole
#18- Saved By The Bird
#19 - The Tail
#23 - Run To The Volcano
#26 - Ghosting
#27 - I Want To Work With Mom
#28 - After Earth

Awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars CD June 20, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I love this score by J.N.H..Got every score he has made including some not publicly released. I liked the Movie and so did the 5 members of my family I took the second time I saw it. Heard it didn't do well. Critics get paid to praise or knock down whatever they want for a living and seduce many into their frame of mind without judging for themselves. I think most of them need some " Rotten Tomatoes" thrown in their faces for being so critical. One of my sons told me about the critical reviews. I lost out on a few worthy shows when I was dumb enough to read them. Thanks to M.Night. for continuing to use J.N.H. for his film scores. Gotta say. I liked Batman Begins and the Dark Knight with his collaboration with Hans.. more than The Dark Knight Rises w/o him. Two of the greatest film composers of all time in my book. They were at the top before "The Maestro" died." Jerry" if you didn't know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly great January 8, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
After hearing all of the negative press concerning the movie and particularly the acting, I was pleased by a good father and son survival story set on an Earth basically unable to sustain human life. Do however accept the broadleaf plants and ferns not destroyed by below-freezing temperatures or wildlife that couldn't either. Overlook the fact that after a thousand years and massive forests, the atmosphere should be breathable. For minor implausibility it can be criticized and the acting could be intimate and warmer but it wasn't "wooden" or even "amateurish". Just go with it and enjoy a very good ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done. Interesting. October 20, 2013

I don't know why a lot of reviews are mediocre. I think this is a well done, and interesting film. Okay, the accents are little odd - I don't know if that was deliberate or what? But the plot is strong and the way the whole movie was put together is very interesting. The dialogue is unique and has philosophical tones. For the first 30 minutes I thought the acting was kind of not as good as it should have been, but then later I realized that, in fact, it is intentional in order to fit the mood of the movie. Also, the sci fi elements and imagery are awesome. At the end of the film - the closing credits - I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was directed by M. Night Shyalaman. I should have known .... the pace of the film, the unique dialogue, and the philosophical tone is definitely him.

I completely recommend this movie to anyone who likes sci fi, and to anyone who likes sci fi with an understated literary reference.
