5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent For What It Is
The first thing to do is figure out what this book is not. It is NOT a tips and tricks, or recipe book for step by step making of great After Effects projects. Look ElseWhere. What it is is the most in depth and comprehensive encyclopedia of After Effects, Production Bundle, and 3rd party plug-ins. I too initially was disapointed by it not being a recipe book, but the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Great plug-in book not a tutorial book
It's a great in-depth review of plug-ins and tryouts, but not an in-depth tutorial. The Adobe Classroom-in-a-book does more related to tutorials than does this book. The title is deceiving in this regard. It would best be titled, "After Effects: In-depth Plug-in Encyclopedia," as has been done for 3D Studio DOS. As well, the supplied images on the CD and...

1.0 out of 5 stars Great plug-in book not a tutorial book, December 26, 1999
This review is from: After Effects 4 in Depth (Paperback)
It's a great in-depth review of plug-ins and tryouts, but not an in-depth tutorial. The Adobe Classroom-in-a-book does more related to tutorials than does this book. The title is deceiving in this regard. It would best be titled, "After Effects: In-depth Plug-in Encyclopedia," as has been done for 3D Studio DOS. As well, the supplied images on the CD and images in the book are "funky" photos of the author and a female friend. Anyone doing commercial/professional work would not be interested in the application of various plug-ins as shown in the book unless their goal is to use cliche'd special effects. However, the author's work/images as shown on his web site and the 3DGraphics web site are OUTSTANDING. It would better if he used and discussed these.

Probably the least helpful software book I've bought. Virtually no instructional value. Could be useful if you're shopping for 3rd party filters, but there's nothing here not easily found on the web.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't make the same mistake I did, April 4, 2000

First of all, this book is in depth into nothing. The authordemonstrates, at no point in the 500+ pages any insight, or knowledgeof After Effects. Even if you accept that this book is a plug-in guide, it fails at that too. There are no tips or examples of how to use any of this plug-ins tastefully. Mr. Mortier simply grabs a random image, and warps it into an ugly mess.

1.0 out of 5 stars I bet the folks who gave a 5-rating is the author's friend!, September 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: After Effects 4 in Depth (Paperback)
The book is totally useless and a waste of money! Even if it wasn't intended to be a "recipe" book, the book should have delivered the "in-depth" approach as it claims. Most readers who buy the plug-ins have the manuals anyway, so WHY repeat it. If I wanted a description of these plug-ins I would just surf the web, right? The book's title is a TOTAL exaggeration and I see very little intellectual basis on the other readers' review except that they are friends of the author. DON'T BUY IT!

1.0 out of 5 stars Shamms Mortimer should be given an award., April 9, 2000
By
This review is from: After Effects 4 in Depth (Paperback)
For successfully writing the worst book on after effects, perhaps even the worst teaching manual ever. It would probably be a challenge to write a book this bad. How do you consistantly, page after page, write a book so devoid of any sense. How did he do it? It was as if the book was written by a 11 year old. An underacheiveing 11 year old. So if you are looking to waste your money waste your time and put your brain through the pain of trying to comprehend Shamms childish writing, then this is the book for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars My GOD!!! What has happened to this world?, August 11, 1999

This review is from: After Effects 4 in Depth (Paperback)
I have used AE in the past and even MY dog could do better work. I must say I am glad I am not the first to say that this book is the single biggest piece of junk I have ever had the misfortune to lay my hands on. Aside from the poor layout his choice of test subjects is decidedly appauling, this book should be retitled "Shamms Mortier and his ugly friends, the animated chonicle of life in a trailor park".

I am truely sad that I wasted my money and if I am ever in his "neck of the woods" I will most definitly ensure the destruction of the orginal copy so that future generations are not subjected to this complete and utter insult to any living beings intelligence.

Occasionally I'll find a clear, understandable, accurate paragraph in this book. I'll then find the same paragraph -- verbatim -- in AE's online help. Shameful!

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful! Don't Buy this Book., June 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: After Effects 4 in Depth (Paperback)
The first line of the Introduction says "This is the best and biggest book on After Effects".

We all look at the introduction for the author's reasons for why the book is written and for who. "The best" ... What ego for a hack computer artist and someone who obviously knows nothing about After Effect. Now for the "biggest" ... opion: the author wanted to get free copies of the plug-ins so he promissed to coverage in his "best" new book. And by the way, you'll learn nothing about the plug-ins.

OK. You're NOT buying this book but you want to learn After Effects. Try Trish Mayer's articles in DV.com's archives, or try attending her classes at the American FIlm Institute, or checkout her training tape VideoSyncrasies.

Don't buy this book. It's GARBAGE.
