Time travel to affect the past,

A computer programmer is recruited for a job. Oddly enough, he finds himself in 1865, tasked with insufficient knowledge and resources, but an unusual talent, to affect the Lincoln Assassination in an unknown way. I've liked a lot of Fred's work, and I like this and this genre enough to chase down "Pyramids", the other book in the "Pilgrim" series, or "Pilgrim", the omnibus volume of the two at the library and read it.
