I listen to a lot of different music - rock, blues, jazz, etc. I like 80s rock (Foghat, Montrose, Boston, Led Zeppelin), local favorite rock musician Eric Johnson, and yet I also like k.d. lang's "Ingénue" album. I like Al Dimeola's fabulous and sometimes furious electric jazz/fusion guitar, but also like acoustic guitar, and I like some of the old Bob Wills' Texas swing, and I like "Asleep at the Wheel"'s Texas swing, and Elana James' what she calls "hot fiddle for the 21st century". The only music I don't care for is the traditional "tear in my beer" country music, and opera.
I heard one of Rosie Flores' songs from this album on the radio (probably our local public radio station) and really liked it and so bought the album, years ago. I don't listen to it real often, so it's a real treat when I do listen to it. This album is very bluesy - a fair amount of slide guitar (or is it lap steel? Same thing in the end, I guess), and Rosie's soulful vocals. Her voice is perfect for this music. The music is so very peaceful and bluesy. The recording itself is very, very nice and clean. There is no powerful "wall of guitars" sound of rock, and the instrumental is pretty simple and clean - mostly just Rosie and the guitar and some drums. It does have a bit of a country flavor to it some would say, but personally I don't care what category it falls into - I just love it! I recently bought some better headphones (my old ones were good, the new ones are better) and it is just wonderful to listen to this CD again! I can't recommend it enough!

A Failure in the Algorithm,

Rosie came up on the Amazon recommendations. Perhaps a failure in the algorithm or wishful thinking on the part of Amazon. As is often the case with Amazon suggestions, I don't much go for it. I do like Marti Brom and Patty Loveless, The Ditty Bops, and Patty Griffin, Dar Williams, and one or two Neko Case. And there's some Lucinda Williams that I enjoy fairly well. But not this. Unremarkable lyrics. Unremarkable voice. It has a high level of generic sincerity and important. I'd rather have either fun or gritty. Both if possible.
