Book Description

You have not attended a Demonstration this month.

In Sola’s city, everyone obeys the rules. Stay away from the trigger cameras and regularly update your Debtbook, and you just might survive. But having to watch the way criminals are dealt with—murdered by Demonstrators in the Stadium—is a law Sola tries to avoid. When a charming Demonstrator kisses her at a party, however, she’s thrust into the Stadium and forced into the very role she despises.

Armed with only natural resourcefulness and a caring nature, Sola narrowly survives her first bout. Her small success means she’s whisked off to a training camp, where she discovers a world beyond the trigger cameras and monitoring—a world where falling in love with a killer doesn’t seem so terrible.

Yet life as a Demonstrator has no peace. Sola must train her way through twenty-five more Demonstrations before she can return home to her father. At the end of each battle, only one survivor remains.

Sola could face anyone in the Stadium . . . even a loved one.

"After the Fear" by Rosanne Rivers is what may be called a "sleeper hit". After all, the "Hunger Games" books have had so much press and film accolades, it is easy to overlook smaller writings on a similar theme.

I'm here to let you know that this book is one that is not to be taken lightly - OR to be taken as a "book on a theme" (as so many authors did cash in on the "Twilight" theme).

Within a single tome, Rivers has encapsulated a three-dimensional and totally believable world. Her characters are flawed, yes (but aren't we all?), but are understanding - if not totally, then realistically - of the types of futures that may await them.

Yes, this (as a former lecturer and secondary school teacher) is a BRILLIANT book to introduce into the reading curriculum. And yes - as per "The Hunger Games" - it is a book upon a dystopian theme. But in this book, there are differences that at once engulfed and consumed me, into the main character ("Sola") and the characters she encounters.

"After the Fear" is far greater in scope (within an adult perspective) than other "post apocalyptic" YA books I have read. We travel through the baptism of fire that is Sola's break with her known world (and her innocence), and GROW with her, feel her anguish, her breakthroughs, failures and triumphs. As opposed to "The Hunger Games" (which I do admire) where Katniss is already toughened and fighting a different inner/outer battle of growth, wits, etc...

I found (as I stayed up way too late, glued to the story!) that with "After the Fear" I recognised (and yes, I am showing my age here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a good book! January 20, 2013
Format:Paperback
I loved this book, it's a real page turner. The characters are so real and engaging, I was rooting for the heroine Sola from the first page, and the romance element is beautifully developed. The world the author paints is very unique and different to other dystopian novels. I highly recommend this book for all young adult fiction/dystopian novel fans, and also for anyone just looking for great book to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this! January 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I don't usually read much fiction but thought this was great and it had me hooked from the start. It's got a very ancient Rome feel but in the future, with a perfect balance between action and romance. Sola rocks!

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic read! March 1, 2013
By EJH
Format:Paperback
A fantastic read that keeps you on the edge of your seat! Full of action and suspense I had a hard time putting this book down. The characters are full of depth, even the secondary characters. The romance between Sola and Dylan is believable and natural, which is not usually the case in most Young Adult novels. There were several occasions I caught myself laughing out loud at their playful interactions. I love a strong female heroine and it was easy to root for Sola from the very beginning and at the same time absolutely despising her enemy. I loved all of the twists and turns the book takes, especially the ending fight scene. I would definitely recommend this book and would love a sequel if the author decides to write one. The only thing lacking is a little more depth to the dystopian world but it really did not subtract from the main story.

5.0 out of 5 stars It will grab you and not let go! July 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have to say, I read a good deal of dystopian novels and I like them, I just tend to get hung up on similarities between them all and it tends to irritate me the duration of the book. With that said I did not have that problem with this one. Yes, there are similarities to The Hunger Games, but it is very different. The characters are different and their circumstances are different and I really just liked them a lot more.

Couple things I really enjoyed:
1) It did not take half the book to understand the plot or character's back stories.
2) There is so much going on in the book, but it is not over whelming and it does not feel rushed.
3) Neither the romance or the action take over too much. The author even wove politics into it without making things cryptic or boring...EXCELLENT!!
4) There is no shying away from what some might call "uncomfortable" topics. I think this is important; if your characters are on the line the author should be willing to put themselves out there as well, and Rosanne is not afraid.

All in all its a bit Gladiator, a bit Hunger Games and a great read that you will not want to put down. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fear! February 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
If you like science fiction, this book is for you. It has everything you will like such as a Roman amphitheater in modern times were battles are fought until death ends it. Sola is the main character who tries to stay out of sight and to go with the flow. Unfortunately she ends up in the arena to fight and contributes to the slaughter which sends her to further training. As is to be expected a love story also is included I liked the book very much so I finished it in one day, exhausted but satisfied. I highly recommend this book without any reservations---buy it! You will love it.

This book is a must for any fans of dystopian literature. It grabbed me from the first page. The dystopian world that the author creates is unique and interesting, and the romance is well-done. I really enjoyed this book. A unique page-turner, and one I plan on re-reading because there are so many interesting details. I look forward to more from this author. I definitely recommend this book!

Really enjoyed this book. On the same level as divergent and The hunger games. Similar themes with a Roman Empire kind of twist. Enjoyable.
