Book Description

Playaway Adult Fiction July 2009
Para-archaeologist Lydia Smith has spent her entire adult life digging into the past, and building a career. But all that changes when she finds herself lost in the catacombs below the city, with no memory of how she came to be there. Now it's her own past that is eluding her; and the secret of what happened to her will endanger everything she's worked to rebuild, including her new marriage to Emmett London, who has a dangerous past of his own to overcome.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This imaginative follow-up to Castle's sci-fi novel After Dark (2000) revisits the futuristic world of Harmony, a planet discovered when an energy field in space opened, providing a gate between Earth and several other inhabitable worlds. The novel picks up where the last book left off, with gifted detangler Lydia Smith dealing with amnesia and recovering from her Lost Weekend in the catacombs beneath the Dead City. Desperate to reconstruct the lost days, Lydia responds to an urgent call from her old college professor, who claims to have news regarding those days. She arrives to find him murdered, and the only clue to the killer's identity is a vague message hidden inside a milk carton. On the brighter side, Lydia's romance with ghost-hunter Emmett London has progressed, and she still has Fuzz, a four-eyed, six-legged dust-bunny who remains her devoted protector. Those unfamiliar with this world will struggle to understand Lydia's predicament and decipher the book's jargon ("she could not summon ghost light, but she could de-rez the danger snares of illusion shadow that the long-vanished aliens had left behind"). In a letter to readers, Castle recommends this book to those who "relish [their] romantic suspense with a paranormal twist," but paranormal romance readers and even fans of far-future romances will likely find this terrain too tough to navigate unless they've read Castle's previous book.

From Booklist

It's the second time in a month that Lydia Smith has found a dead body. The first time pararchaelogist and museum curator Lydia became tangled up in a murder investigation it brought her together with her current paramour, ghost hunter Emmett London. So naturally Lydia thinks of Emmett when she stumbles across the body of her former professor, Lawrence Maltby. While the police believe Maltby's death was caused by his drug addiction, Lydia doesn't buy it. So with Emmett's help, she pursues her own investigation even as she tries to figure out exactly what kind of a relationship she and Emmett have. Castle (a pseudonym for Jayne Ann Krentz) continues Lydia's and Emmett's adventures together, which began in After Dark (2000), as she returns to the fascinating world of Harmony, where the relics of an ancient civilization linger and where dangerous things like energy ghosts lurk. Castle neatly combines her sharp wit, polished plotting, and gift for subtle characterization in a superbly sensual and captivating action- and adventure-filled romance. John Charles

More About the Author

When a curtain opened allowing travel between Earth and a new world, it was a tourism opportunity like no one could have envisioned. Travelers moved back and forth between worlds with ease until...the curtain closed.

Abandoned on the new world with no access to Earth technology, the unexpected colonists had to learn to survive. And survive they did. JAYNE CASTLE chronicles the lives of their descendants in her best selling HARMONY SERIES. Turns out folks on HARMONY are starting to exhibit paranormal abilities and -- wouldn't you know it -- some of those people with psychic talents descend from members of the ARCANE SOCIETY (a bestselling series that Jayne writes under her two other pen names, JAYNE ANN KRENTZ and AMANDA QUICK).

Jayne is busy working on CANYONS OF NIGHT, Book 3 in the LOOKING GLASS TRILOGY due out in Summer 2011. Writing as JAYNE ANN KRENTZ she will release Book I, IN TOO DEEP, in Winter 2011. And writing under her historical pen name, AMANDA QUICK, she will contribute Book II in the trilogy, QUICKSILVER, in Spring 2011.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best, April 15, 2004
I wish there was a higher rating than 5. Nobody does it better. If you read "After Dark" you probably enjoyed it even more. The sense of a fully fleshed out world is awesome. The sexual tension between Lydia and Emmett is great. I love the way each worries about the feelings of the other. The dance of romance is Jayne at her best. From Lydia's determination to protect Emmett, to his worries about her feelings for ghost-hunters, we are constantly waiting for the explosions to begin. However, Jayne Castle, knows what we want. I just loved the Restoration Ball and The DRESS. Two hearts wanting the same thing but scared to reach out too quickly. The suspense and stirring adventure are not overshadowed by the romance, and the thrilling conclusion is wonderfully enhanced by Fuzz and a number of unusual and fasinating characters. Could not put it down. I have already reread it 4 times. (UNBELIEVABLE for me.) I usually don't like to read a book that continues a relationship, but this one is perfect. This is a keeper. And be sure to get "After Dark" also.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Harmony books...PLEASE!!, March 18, 2004
By
Jayne Ann has been doing trilogies - cranking out three books for a set of characters, and outside her Eclipse Bay, the first one is so good, second two suck! REALLY.

However, it's with her Harmony books Jayne Ann really returns to her top form. They are fresh, funny and show she still have the magic. So STOP WASTING TIME ON JUNK and write were you show the same spark of romance and delight in the genre.

PLEASE. These characters were so warm, real, sexy and loving. What you other books are missing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jayne, Write More Harnony Books, Please, March 7, 2004
This was another fun and involved look into the world of Harmony. Lydia Smith stumbles on another murder early in the book and Emmett London finds her soon after, at the murder site once again. It reads more like a chap book than a stand alone novel, so if you haven't read again 'After Dark'. I'd recommend reading it first.
