It feels GOOD,
By Jerry Swartout (Hamilton, MT United States) - See all my reviews

On this one,the Duke of George is really hot. But it puts way more involving music in it than anything he has ever done on a CD before, or since. It is totally romantic, but with an undercurrent of intelligent energy that will tend to prolong any good times you and yours are having, because it will carry you along with a wonderful groove that isn't simply funky, or souful, but uniquely musically involving, like nothing you have ever heard. Can he play? OH......YES.

It Does What it was meant to do very well,

This review is from: After Hours (Audio CD)
This all-instrumental concept album (the first for Duke in a number of years) is an ode to an "evening" of you know what with that special someone. How does it work? Extremely well. The music conveys the moods perfectly and Duke once again demonstrates his uncanny ability to COMMUNICATE with his music, almost to the point of speaking. This is what makes him popular, but also makes him so maddeningly irritating to purist jazz critics. Duke has never been afraid of being liked, and of being "pop" in the sense of providing AVERAGE listeners (not highbrow intellectuals) genuine pleasure and delight. And in that sense, this music really delivers. (This is not to say that George's music is bereft of intellectual substance; this album is played at a very high musical level). If you're alone, let your imagination run wild about that magical evening you could be having. And if you are already in love, let this music be the perfect end to end soundtrack for that relationship-saving evening you've been craving.Doctor George Duke: has written the perfect love Rx with "After Hours"

From Duke 'Til Dawn,

"After Hours" is a highly seductive instrumental albumshowcasing Duke's fantastic way with the keys and it's a wonderful ride from the opening funk number "Rush Hour/Road Rage" and the equally grooving "It's On"."Together As One" and "Sweet Dreams" are two mellow, cool acoustic jazz numbers and the rest from "The Touch,"From Dusk 'Til Dawn" are sensual mood grooved of the highest order! It's a concept album about a romantic evening between two lovers and considering it's general flow of sound this is PERFECT for the occasion!George Duke's finest 90's album!

A Great Artist, A Great CD,
By
This review is from: After Hours (Audio CD)
I've listened to George Duke for about twenty-five years. In that time he's made some execllent recordings, this being one of them. In the liner notes he says that this is the first intrumental album he's done in over twenty years. Let me tell you, it's well worth the wait. This CD has some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. Right now I'm listening to the song "The Touch." It's a bright, soothing waltz that makes excellent use of the sensous bass flute. Get this CD and if you like it, may I suggest two other George Duke recordings "Brazilian Love Affair" and "Cool."

Mr. Duke is getting to smooth now. I prefer his earlier works like Is love enough, snapshot, illusions ..

Not many George Duke's recordings are of interest to Jazz listeners, since he has spent most of his musical career as a funk Keyboardist and producer, however "After Hour" is a complete different story.
This release is a pure relaxing enjoyment. Great piano, great keyboard, a little slick groove in between; again this is definitely his most rewarding Jazz release. If you are into Joe Sample or The Crusaders, Soul and Classic Jazz, "After Hour" will be a real treat for your soul and ears. Highly recommended.

The LA Times Editorial Review Sucks,

This is a great cd, particularly the first 2 tracks. The balance of the cd is very good as well. This is a Grammy nominated cd. The Amazon staff slipped by selecting the LA Times review as its choice for the editorial review.

Smoothest of the Smooth!,

Recommendations: don't listen to this CD too intently while driving; it'll lull into a trance and, if you're not careful, into the rear of the vehicle in front of you. Next, this is a great wedding gift; this is music to procreate to. Men, this is a great CD for a first date; great conversation piece. Ladies, wanna impress a guy during that first dinner you cook him? Play this in the background and, unless he's just no good, he'll come back for more (at least, he may try to talk you out of the CD). Long day at the office? Make this the first CD you play at home and the rest of your day will be like paradise. Perfect cuddle-up music. George, make another one like this one, please! I'll be the first in line at my local retailer to buy it.

A Co-Worker gave this to me as a Christmas Present in 1999 and said he knew I'd like it. I doubted he knew me that well, but I guess I was wrong.
This CD is so exotic, jazzy and sultry I play it over and over again. I've had to buy it several times. I play it to unwind and when I want to go to another space. George Duke plays such complicated compositions that I never tire of them. You know he has an elaborate musical education by the European mixed with African and Native American compositions that blend into an earthy erotica. You have to have this CD in your collection. |
