5.0 out of 5 stars GLENN FREY'S NEW CAREER AS A CROONER SUITS HIM! May 8, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
This is a fantastic cd by Eagles front man Glenn Frey. His smooth voice suits these songs to a tee and it sounds like he's been singing them for a long time. Glenn was always my favorite Eagle and his voice just get's better and better. Get the 14 track deluxe version, there isn't a weak track in the bunch. It would be a waste of your time to list favorite tracks because this album is a modern classic from first note to last. If you're a Eagles and Glenn Frey fan you'll love this. Look out Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney, there's a new kid in town!

5.0 out of 5 stars Glenn Frey Takes A New Direction. May 8, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Glenn Frey, original band member of legendary rock band The Eagles, is taking a new direction in this new CD release titled 'After Hours'. It's his 6th solo album : has recorded 14 classic love songs from the 40s to present (cover versions of Brian Wilson, Randy Newman, Tony Bennet, Nat King Cole & Dinah Washington for example). It's a fantastic classical/jazz music presentation of these songs by Glenn Frey. My favourite track is Brian Wilson's "Caroline, No" : wonderful guitar, melody & vocals. Other stand-outs/gems/solid tracks include "For Sentimental Reasons", "My Buddy", "The Good Life", "The Shadow Of Your Smile" (slow-tempo track with a beautiful piano & 'jazzy-sweepy' drums), "It's Too Soon To Know" (great saxophone), "Worried Mind" (countryish-jazzy/classical track), "I Wanna Be Around" (great Gibson guitar work) & "After Hours" (title track with wonderful piano & 'sweepy' drums). Great tracks include "Route 66" (up-tempo bluesy/countryish track), "Here's To Life", "The Look Of Love" (pop-ish track, great duet) & Randy Newman's "Same Girl" (orchestral sound with broadway/cabaret vocals). There is no weak track or CD filler in this CD.

On overall, Glenn Frey is excellent in covering classic love songs (in a jazzy/classical form, his first in his solo projects). It's his first CD release since 1995 : a well deserved 5 star performance & a highly recommended CD listening!

I just recieved my CD from Amazon of Glenn's new album After Hours, Wow!!!! This guy can belt out the best of an era gone by. As The Eagles lead Glenn steps away from the country rock we are so used to and does a fantastic job on this one. Give this CD a listen, it's fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A male version of Diana Krall recordings May 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Very nice! (I know the "anything that isn't head-banging rock is elevator music" crowd gives this a one star but if you buy a CD of 30s 40s and 50s tunes, you shouldn't expect to "rock out" on them!) The music, tunes, performance and everything is very reminicent of Diana Krall albums. So if you think a male singer version of Diana Krall music is "boring" then don't get this. If you think you'd like that, then it is highly recommended! I am very impressed with Glenn's crooning voice; might not be Bing Crosby, but it's very good!

4.0 out of 5 stars "After Hours" induces a 'peaceful easy feeling' March 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I recently saw Glenn Frey in concert, under some rather amazing circumstances (more on that later). It was after that show that I sought out this album, which I knew had been released last year but I honestly had not given it any attention.

"After Hours" (11 tracks; 41 min.) finds Frey revisiting standards from the sixties (mostly), and some even older songs added for good measure. The album kicks off with the Tommy Dorsey cover "For Sentimental Reasons" and that songs sets the tone for the entire album. Other great tracks include "Route 66" (Nat King Cole cover), "The Shadow of Your Smile" (Tony Bennett cover), "The Look of Love" (Burt Bacharach-penned Dusty Springfield cover), and of course "Caroline, No" (Brian Wilson-penned Beach Boys cover). And on and on. The last song is the title track, which in fact was originally written for "The Allnighter" album but didn't quite fit on there. What a great rescue of that song, 30 years later! Throughout the album Frey's lead vocals sound surprisingly warm, and his backing band is in fine form.

In all, this album isn't going to shock the world or break new barriers, but instead it induces a 'peaceful easy feeling'. I was recently in Sydney (AUS) for a short business trip, and couldn't believe it when I saw that Glenn Frey was playing the famed Sydney Opera House on the last night of my stay there, so I had to check it out (both the venue and the band). Frey and his glorious backing band kicked off with 3 Eagles classics, and then played the majority of the "After Hours" album tracks, accompanied by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In between songs, Frey provided some great banter, including how and why he chose these songs for this album. More Eagles tunes and his biggests solo hits rounded out the set. That this took place in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall was the cherry on the cake. What a fantastic evening of music that was! Meanwhile "After Hours" is an underrated album, and definitely worth checking out.

Given that he either wrote or co-wrote some of the most endearing and enduring classic rock songs of the 1970s, and was in one of the most popular bands of all time, you'd probably think Glenn Frey wouldn't need to record cover songs, let alone songs that pre-date the onset of rock and roll or that have a classic pop feel. But that's what he does on AFTER HOURS, his first solo album of new material since 1992's STRANGE WEATHER. It is an album that has a lot of meaning for him, because he likely had such an album as a concept in his mind for a very long time. The inspiration for the album, according to him, came from what his long-time friend Linda Ronstadt did in the mid-1980s with the late Nelson Riddle. This album is much closer to the small ensemble format Linda did for her 2004 album HUMMIN' TO MYSELF than the Nelson Riddle albums, but the idea is the same, as is the execution of it, done with brilliance and respect.

With a band crew that includes several who have worked on Frey's solo albums and the Eagles' 2007 magnum opus LONG ROAD OUT OF EDEN, AFTER HOURS includes a lot of well-worn covers that are given a unique spin, like the classic Bobby Troup standard "Route 66" (which, incidentally, goes through Winslow, Arizona [hint, hint]); the Beach Boys' 1966 song "Caroline, No"; Randy Newman's "Same Girl"; and the 1967 Bacharach/David classic (made famous by Dusty Springfield) "The Look Of Love." The title track, written by Frey and long-time partner Jack Tempchin, also fits the smooth format of the album. And interestingly, two of the songs on the album, "For Sentimental Reasons" and "It's Too Soon To Know", had also been done by Linda herself, so his inclusion of them on AFTER HOURS was as much a warm acknowledgment of her as it was a genuine love of those songs.
