Biography

Pinetop Perkins is one of the last great Mississippi bluesmen still performing. He began playing blues around 1927, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest blues pianists of all time. He created a style that has influenced three generations of piano players, and will continue to be the yardstick by which great blues pianists are measured.

Born Willie Perkins in Belzoni, Mississippi, in 1913,… Read more in Amazon's Pinetop Perkins Store

Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

Granted his own session at long last, the former Muddy Waters and Legendary Blues Band pianist rehashes staples from the repertoires of Waters, Memphis Slim, and Robert Nighthawk with ebullient naturalness that is paramount to his charm. He never feels his keyboard boogie dances or functional singing as cliches, even when New Yorkers Little Mike and the Tornadoes systematically grind out the platitudes. Consumer advice: Avoid Little Mike's Heart Attack (Blind Pig CD) at all costs. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

5.0 out of 5 stars Does not deserve a 2* rating!, August 15, 2007
This review is from: After Hours (Audio CD)
Excellent piano blues by a performer in his mid-70s - pay attention to the better reviews; this album is a 'bulleted' 5* recommendation in the All Music Guide to the Blues (meaning the one to start with in exploring this musician) and also a top recommendation in the Rough Guide to the Blues; I'd probably go more for 4* or 4 1/2*, but wanted to 'bump' the rating up to draw attention to this excellent effort!

4.0 out of 5 stars The best selection, July 5, 2005
This review is from: After Hours (Audio CD)
Since he had so little recorded, this is undoubtably the best choice for a good sampling of his repertoire. I would have like to have heard him when he was younger, but he still has a lot of energy.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC BLUES ALBUM, September 18, 2003
By
jay ancer (Plantation, FL. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: After Hours (Audio CD)
When I first listened to this album I was amazed at just how much energy this "old" blues player generated. I believe Pinetop was well into his 70's when he recorded this amazing debut album following a long stint with Muddy Waters. Songs like GOT MY MOJO WORKIN and the title song AFTER HOURS are performed with great enthusiasm and power by Perkins and the band. Pinetop also displays a light, playful side on PINETOPS BOOGIE. There is not a weak song in the set. This is truly a "must have" album for blues enthusiasts, and music fans in general. Disregard the other review. Not only is the English poor, but so is the critique!
