Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It all started out so well for Lauren Spencer and Ryan Cooper—an all-consuming college romance, a perfectly imperfect proposal, a lovely wedding, and a rustic honeymoon. Now, almost 10 years later, Lauren and Ryan find themselves rehashing the same arguments with increasing vehemence. In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, Lauren and Ryan decide to take a yearlong break from each other, abstain from all communication, and figure out how they’d like to move forward. Once Ryan moves out, Lauren spends the next year learning more about herself, her marriage, and the foundations of good relationships than she ever imagined. Reid’s second novel (after Forever, Interrupted, 2013) contrasts the heady bliss of courtship with the smothering familiarity of a long-term partnership. Written in a breezy, humorous style familiar to fans of Jane Green and Elin Hilderbrand, After I Do focuses on Lauren’s journey of self-discovery. The novel’s pacing is a bit slow at times, but the intriguing premise and well-drawn supporting characters contribute to an emotionally uplifting and inspiring story. --Stephanie Turza

"Taylor Jenkins Reid offers an entirely fresh and new perspective on what can happen after the "happily ever after." With characters who feel like friends and a narrative that hooked me from the first page, After I Do takes an elegant and incisively emotional look at the endings and beginnings of love. Put this book at the top of your must read list!" (Jen Lancaster New York Times bestselling author)

“Written in a breezy, humorous style familiar to fans of Jane Green and Elin Hilderbrand, After I Do focuses on Lauren’s journey of self-discovery. The intriguing premise and well-drawn characters contribute to an emotionally uplifting and inspiring story.” (Booklist)

"Touching and powerful...Reid masterfully grabs hold of the heartstrings and doesn't let go. A stunning first novel." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"Moving, gorgeous and, at times, heart-wrenching. Taylor Jenkins Reid writes with wit and true emotion that you can feel. Read it, savor it, share it." (Sarah Jio New York Times bestselling author of The Violets of March)

"Taylor Jenkins Reid writes with ruthless honesty, displaying an innate understanding of human emotion and creating characters and relationships so real I’m finding it impossible to let them go. After I Do is a raw, unflinching exploration of the realities of marriage, the delicate nature of love, and the enduring strength of family. Simultaneously funny and sad, heartbreaking and hopeful, Reid has crafted a story of love lost and found that is as timely as it is timeless." (Katja Millay author of The Sea of Tranquility)

“A moving novel about life and death.” (Kirkus)

"You'll laugh, weep and fly through each crazy-readable page." (Redbook)

"Sweet, heartfelt, and surprising, Forever Interrupted is a story about a young woman struggling to find her way after losing her husband. These characters made me laugh as well as cry, and I ended up falling in love with them, too." (Sarah Pekkanen author of The Best of Us)

“Taylor Jenkins Reid has written a poignant and heartfelt exploration of love and commitment in the absence of shared time that asks, what does it take to be the love of someone's life?” (Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus New York Times bestselling authors)

"This beautifully rendered story explores the brilliance and rarity of finding true love, and how to find our way back through the painful aftermath of losing it. These characters will leap right off the page and into your heart." (Amy Hatvany author of Heart Like Mine)

"As uplifting as it is brutally honest—a must-read." (Kirkus)

This is an amazing book. The first section of the book - when Lauren and Ryan decide to separate - shows an excruciating view of how the things we found delightful and loveable at the beginning of a relationship can morph into making us feel irritated and even infuriated. It is true that little things can break a couple up. It's a sad/funny incident involving a disagreement over where they parked the car while attending a Lakers game that finally makes the couple face that they want to be apart.

They decide to take a year apart, with no contact with one another.

There are so many layers to the relationship that are peeled off and revealed by the author. To the bitter decision to separate, they both say they feel they still love one another but they just can't live with one another.

I've been married for a long time now (more than 25 years) but I was divorced earlier in my life. I understand what it takes to keep a marriage together and how one comes apart. The author really hits the nail on the head. When she wrote about them coming apart, I kept saying to my self as I read, " YES...that is exactly how it can happen."

During their year separation Ryan and Lauren both come to realize that life did not turn out the way they wanted partly because they did not tell the other person what they wanted and partly because they never thought about "marriage" being different from "courting." An example of this is that Lauren hated going to Lakers games and Ryan got tickets often. Instead of speaking up and even suggesting that she only go to an occasional game, she went but harbored some resentment. It never occurred to Ryan (nor did he ask) whether she liked going to the games or not.

Lauren, is the main character of this book. She says at some point that, she reads thrillers because it is less painful...

I'd identified myself with her, in a way that I thought I wasn't going to be able to finish the book. I felt, so anxious, sad, unsteady, uncomfortable, lonely, confuse, angry...I tell, everything that she felt I felt. I think anyone who has been married, or is married or in a relationship will relay to all these predicaments of marriage, or just being in a relationship.

The hardest part is not to find someone....It is to keep the interest alive. My heart ache with this novel. I ached for them, I thought I wasn't going to like the ending.

The beautiful moral of this novel, the cryptic message behind it all, is that you never give up, no matter what. However, even though I will eventually read this author again or something similar to this genre, for now, I think I have had my fix, and I am going to stick to mobs, MC' s , and organize crime books out there. They ARE going to rip my heart out, but at least, they will be ruthless about it.

After I Do takes us on the amazing journey of one couple from the very beginning to what might very well be the end....and you won't want to miss one moment of the trip. We see their relationship progress from the first stages of infatuation, through first kisses, first apartments, first dog and on. Unlike most conventional romance stories which end at the Happily Ever After, Taylor Jenkins Reid takes us beyond that point in After I show us what happens after the HEA. And it's not always pretty.

We see Lauren and Ryan go from being the intimately connected couple that can't live without each other to a couple that almost can't even stand each other...and it's not an easy path to walk with them. To see all the little things that added up to years of resentments and distaste...was both heartbreaking and frightening...because can help but wonder...could this happen to me?

The characters, the story, all of it was so wonderfully believable and easy to connect with. I think that someone at any stage of a relationship or even hoping for a relationship would find it hard to put this one down.

I laughed, I cried, I wondered why they made the hard choices they did, and most of all I rooted for them...and in doing so rooted for myself and every other married woman out there.

Final Thoughts:

This incredibly well written and thought provoking read will make you re-examine all of your relationships and how you define love. My first taste of Taylor Jenkins Reid, this certainly won't be my last.

After I do. Its been a couple weeks since I read this. This book had me confused and upset and over all emotional, I wasn't sure which way the author was going. It seemed hasty and too fast in the beginning. But I couldn't stop reading. Somewhere in there and I won't say when, it gripped me. It made me think. I married my husband with the expectation that I wouldn't run. No running for me. One thing we have that these characters do not is an open honest relationship from the beginning, only because I have no filter between my brain and my mouth. After I do. Not something I would do but the story is intriguing, keeping the spark and realizing that people do change and evolve is a hard thing to accept in a marriage, but after you say I do the story doesn't end and you have to fight for it, by any means necessary. I get lazy, or I just expect him to read my mind and know what I want when that is just not the case. The outcome of this book was great; would I do the same thing? No, I don't think I would, good thing this is a piece of fiction! Even though it has been a couple weeks, I am still thinking of this book. The author did good.
