A wonderful novel, April 24, 2008
This review is from: After London Or, Wild England (Paperback)
Written just a few years before his pre-40 death of TB in 1885, this isn't the most uplifting of novels but it is extremely compelling.
The depiction of collapse, pollution and decay is familiar to us now through multiple post-apocalypse novels and movies yet it was newer to its audience then. Rather than lament the wasteland Jefferies manages to peel it back enough to grant a look at what nature might be if given a chance. It evokes a yearning for unspoiled landscapes. It will send you looking at his other novels, without disappointment. Jefferies stands with Hardy and Lawrence as writers deeply rooted in their English rural settings, protective, sometimes angry, sometimes awed by the forces of nature and fearful of the threats it faces through change.
