Book Description

(A 100-page True Crime Short with photographs) Clint Eastwood’s movie and the book from which it was made — Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil — put the grand historic city of Savannah on the map. Tourists flocked to see the gorgeous mansion where flamboyant designer and antiques dealer Jim Williams, played by Kevin Spacey, killed his young gay lover, played by Jude Law. While the movie portrayed the natives of Savannah as remarkably decadent, exotic characters, it missed the amazing dark side of Jim Williams himself.

Savannah owes Jim Williams an enormous debt of gratitude for his remarkable restoration of historic houses. A brilliant and intensely interesting, charismatic figure, he brought a style and sophistication to the city that it did not have before. Rich and famous people, like Jacqueline Onassis and Rockefellers, made special trips to bargain for his extraordinary antique treasures. However, he was also a smooth predator, whose crimes could have put him behind bars long before he shot his lover.

The wonderful world of Jim Williams came crashing down on him one night after he killed Danny Hansford. Williams stood trial four times for premeditated murder. Between the passionate and dedicated prosecution and the best defense lawyers money could buy, precisely what happened that night is still a mystery. The prosecution’s documents, never published before, reveal its highly effective strategies and the intrigue that caused the Georgia Supreme Court to overturn two convictions.

“Finally! The real story of one of the most bizarre cases in modern crime history. Marilyn Bardsley has nailed it. The movie was Hollywood. The book was...a stretch. After Midnight is the unvarnished truth.”

—Chuck Hustmyre, bestselling crime novelist and screenwriter, A Killer Like Me and House of the Rising Sun

Kindle Nation Daily Review:

"I suspect there are a good many of our readers who like myself savored the pleasures, on the screen or on the printed page, of John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The prose was elegant, the story was gripping, and both book and film were so richly evocative of one of my favorite cities -- what was not to like? Yet even after all of that, after all of the seductive, artful presentation of Jim Williams/Kevin Spacey, Danny Hansford/Jude Law, Lady Chablis/Lady Chablis, John Cusack's narrator, and more, weren't you left hanging just a bit? Didn't you want to get closer to the truth, at long last, closer than Hollywood or Berendt's atmospherics allowed? I did, but I never thought I'd get there until I learned about and read Marilyn Bardsley's remarkably well-told exposition of the truth of the matter and the evidence behind the intrigue. It was a treat for me, and one that could be consumed in a single satisfying sitting, so it is only right that I should share it here with you. Enjoy. Your questions will be answered, and you may discover both an author and a series to which you will want to return in Marilyn Bardsley and RosettaBooks' Crimescape series, for which she is the editor." -Steve Windwalker.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, badly written, full of errors May 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A tedious fraud that exploits John Berendt's Pulitzer-nominated bestseller but has none of the graceful writing and the fast-paced, compelling narrative that has made his original such a favorite. Bardsley gets bogged down in mind-numbingly irrelevant detail but skimps where details would help. She writes, for example, that Jim Williams had "a tremendous sense of humor," that his parties were "fabulous," that people found him "the most interesting person they ever met." Filling in those blanks is where Berendt excelled.

This mini-ebook is boring, badly written, and filled with errors, which is surprising for a book that purports to set the record straight. Contrary to what Bardsley says, Jim Williams did not dine in "luxurious style" at the nightclub Who's Who, because Who's Who was a sleazy gay bar that did not serve food. Danny Hansford never set foot in Club One; he was dead years before it opened. Danny and Chablis were not friends; they never met (that was an invention of the movie). Jacqueline Onassis was not a "client" of Jim Williams; she met him once, never bought anything from him and, despite what Bardsley says, did not offer to buy his Faberge box for $90,000. And on and on it goes...

1.0 out of 5 stars Mystery of the 5-star reviews...SOLVED June 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
An uninterrupted stream of thirteen 5-star reviews greeted this mediocre e-book when it was released in July 2011. That raised suspicions. Now, an improbable 25 of the book's 42 reviews have five stars. Some of the reviewers used their real names, which makes a little sleuthing possible.
It turns out that two of Bardsley's 5-star reviews were submitted by her next-door neighbors in Savannah. Phone book listings show Bardsley at #14, and Nichols and Moore down the street at #5 and #10. Six of Bardsley's rave reviews are from her friends on Facebook (Herrin, Bell, Arie K, Birkved, Hustmyre, and Fickett.)

One of the three reviews highlighted by Amazon as "Most Helpful" is by Rachael Bell, who happens to be the author of "Sexual Obsessions Gone Wrong," which is published by the Crimescape series, which Bardsley edits. Bell, in other words, is giving five stars to her editor, boss, and Facebook friend. (All five of Ms. Bell's Amazon reviews, by the way, are for Bardsley's Crimescape books, and she gives them all five stars.) Chuck Hustmyre's five stars might have been payback for the five stars Bardsley gave him in 2007 for his book "An Act of Kindness," which appears to have been an act of kindness itself, because his book got only one other review. After Hustmyre returned the favor with 5-stars for "After Midnight," Bardsley gave him five stars for his new book, "The Ax Man of New Orleans."

Many of Bardsley's 5-star fans used pseudonyms and cannot be traced. But two (Nichols and A&Y) slipped up and referred to Bardsley simply as "Marilyn." Says A&Y, "Marilyn... makes you feel you are listening to a dear friend over a glass of chardonnay." Yeah, right.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading June 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very disappointed in this book. I was not paying close attention and missed the After in the title. I actually thought I was buying Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Seemed thrown together and not even worth 99 cents I paid. Very disappointing and I wish Amazon had done a clearer job of pointing out this was not the novel of similar name. I have purchased several books I have really liked in the deal of the day but this was definitely not one of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I was expecting a sequel to the original book, which this clearly is not. However it was pretty interesting and told the story in a factual and compelling way.
