5.0 out of 5 stars Not that bad....
This is pretty good, although there is some tape hiss in the audio, it is clearly mastered from a VHS tape. Kind of unfortunate, but nonetheless, this is the only official release of Clapton with Knopfler, and for that reason alone it is essential. Lots of sweet guitar solos by both Clapton and Knopfler. Knopfler blows E.C. away on "Badge" and does some great acoustic...

1.0 out of 5 stars Bootleg with poor quality - Amazon shouldn't sell it
Poor audio quality, no-name publisher, even gaps inside songs when whoever taped this hit the pause button by mistake. Don't buy it.

Knopfler blows E.C. away on "Badge" and does some great acoustic solos behind Nathan East on the blind faith tune. Alan Clark plays a killer synth solo on Cocaine, and plays the piano part of Layla perfectly.

Pick this one up, but don't have high expecatations. I didn't...and I was pleasantly surprised. This is not the best quality, but it is still a good performance and a great release.

An odd thing about this concert, is Eric had his drummer off to the side, so Ferrone doesn't come into view much unless it's a close up on him.

I think this dvd benefits from lower end sound systems. If you try to watch it on great equipment, you'll probably be disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not even a good bootleg, March 11, 2007
This review is from: After Midnight Live (Audio CD)
If you're going to rip-off an artist by putting the artist's work out there without paying him, at least have the good manners to take some time to make the rip-off sound decent. Any teen-ager with a free audio editing program could have made this listenable in about 45 minutes.

No, this is a straight line recording off of a high generation VHS tape. Sonic garbage.

OK, bootleggers are a fact of life, I guess, it's just this one is lazy.

And shame on Amazon for selling bootlegs. I'd not have thought they'd support ripping off artists (no one on the CD is making a penny on it, so you know).

4.0 out of 5 stars I lost interest in EC a long time ago..., September 12, 2006

...but when I saw who was in the band for this show, I said to myself "sold" and haven't regretted it for a minute.

Mark Knopfler.

'Nuff said.

And Alan Clark on keys, Steve Ferrone on drums, as well as EC stalwart Nathan East on bass and occasional lead vocals.

With Jody Lynn-Scott on percussion and two gals singing backup whose names escape me.

And ya know what? It works beautifully and makes for a very enjoyable all-but two hours.

It's certainly a different approach to the Clapton catalogue of overplayed, Top 40 pap.

You may be sick to death of WONDERFUL TONIGHT, but the version on here is simply......wonderful.

The quality is very good, hence the four stars instead of five...had this been up to today's recording standards (it was recorded in 1988), it would be a no-brainer.

As it is, it's a must for anyone who would even marginally appreciate seeing (and hearing) the genius of Mark Knopfler in concert with the steadyness of Slowhand.

Surprise your friends!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bootleg or not it's great., October 12, 2006

True the audio on this leaves a little to be desired. The audio is not "professional" by any means - the original source of this is the "in house" mix from the Shoreline Amphitheater which used it's own camera's to show the concert to the crowd - this was released as the DVD of same name.

At first listen you will not like the audio, but rather then say it's bad (which I did) I LISTENED to the rest of it and whatever mistakes there are, these do not matter if you ENJOY the show.

That said - I recomend this to any Clapton fan, as well as those that like Dire Straits even though this concert only features one DS song. The interplay between Eric and Marc is fun to watch and listen to.

This live concert had some great musicians with Eric but the sound is really bad. As in prior reviews, it is worse than a bootleg release. No stereo and low sound. Stay away from this one EC fans--it is a rip.

The audio quality of this product is mediocre. I am assuming that the problem is in the recording phase. Either that or this is a pirated copy made with inferior recording equipment. The main problem seems to be the very limited dynamic range as if a lot of compression was used to record it. I find it hard to believe that a professional recording made at a live concert can have this poor quality sound.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful....simply awful, January 26, 2008

Bootlegs, as other reviewers mentioned, are a way of life. This recording is one more reason to ban them altogether. While this may be the only recorded document of this particular show, the audio quality is GOD AWFUL. And to add insult to injury, it's not even in stereo ! In previous reviews, the authors mention that the recording either originated from a video camera at the show or a second generation VHS tape. And (at least with the recording that I purchased) it almost seems as if the original tape was bunched up in a ball and left that way to degrade before transferring to compact disc. Once I removed the shrink wrap, began reading the liner notes and noticed a total absence of production credits, I should have known that I was in for a severe disappointment.
I love Clapton's music as much as any of his fans and while this recording does document a period in E.C.'s career, it is at least from a sonic standpoint even a completist's nightmare. I would strongly suggest to anyone who is considering purchasing this disc either from Amazon or from your neighborhood record store as I did, to at least check out the reviews here at Amazon (I didn't but had heard about the set MINUS all of the misgivings). Believe me, you'll be glad that you did.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Guitar Fans, November 16, 2006
I bought this dvd not because i am a fan of Clapton but as a fan of the guitar style of Mark Knopfler. Clapton plays his heart out but it is his singing that really stands out. His guitar solos become tedious as the concert progresses in contrast to Knopfler's variety of sounds and styles. Knopfler's solo in Badge simply blows Clapton away and is easily the highlight for me. I came away impressed however with Clapton's vocals and energy so overall a great dvd to watch for both Clapton and Knopfler fans

4.0 out of 5 stars ELECTRYING ERIC, October 28, 2006
I have listeded to several DVDs by Eric Clapton and this is by far the very best. The first reveiwer apparentlly was not watching the same concert I did. Eric, usualy conserviative in his style of play exploded on this DVD. He took two or even three solos on almost every song. This is not typical of Eric. He had a great backup band featuring the outstanding work by Nathan Eastern on bass and Mark Knopfler on guitar. Eric's guitar work was inspring, awesome and never better. THhs is his best live performance. End of discussion. Thd DVD starts with a rousing version of Crossroads and concludes with a pounding rendition of Sunshine of Your Love. Layla simply becomes an anthem of rock full of crashing cords and pulsating lead solos. It is the hightlligjt of the DVD. Run do not walk to your nearest CD store and pick this one up. It is worth seeing Eric in a small setting at his very, very best. P.S. this is not a bootleg as one reader stated. A bootlet has a very grainy look to it. The sound qualiity usually variies trhought the DVD. The lighting is usually bad. The colors are not evenly matched. This reader either needs glasses or can't tell the difference between the real thing and a bootleg.
Outstanding DVD!
