Book Description

#1 New York Times Bestselling Author P.C. Cast

Being a psychic detective who can channel only negative emotions makes Kent Raef good at catching murderers, but bad at maintaining relationships. Then Lauren Wilcox arrives with a most intriguing case: her twin sister has been murdered and is communing with Lauren's spirit—and sharing her body. Raef's the only one who can track the killer and free the spirit. But soon he begins to wonder just which twin he wants to save…and why.

New York Times Bestselling Author Gena Showalter

Artist Aurora Harper is convinced she's witnessed a crime—a murder so brutal she's repressed the memories, only to paint the scene by the light of the moon. Now she needs her new neighbor, Detective Levi Reid, to help her track down the victim—and the killer. Levi's dealing with his own memory issues, but one thing he knows for sure: Harper is meant to be his, and nothing can take her away from him—not in this life…and not in death.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In a world in which psychic powers are mainstream and used for evil as well as good, there exists an agency, After Moonrise, to handle psychic crimes. Two tales by prime paranormal romance writers tell the story of a two agency cases. In Cast’s “Possessed,” psychic detective Kent Raef loses his ability to read negative emotions just as Lauren Wilcox needs his help finding the murderer of her twin sister, Aubrey. In Showalter’s “Haunted,” Lana, one of the company’s head mediums, insists that her best friend, Harper, enlist the help of detective Levi Reid to investigate why Harper is having extended blackouts and painting images of what seems to be a memory of gruesome death. Cast makes her more controversial case compelling, though the relationships in it aren’t equally balanced, which may leave some readers unsettled by how the love story unfolds. There are few surprises in Showalter’s entry, but its macabre twist is nonetheless chilling. Levi and Harper are two unconventional peas in a pod, and their lighter moments are needed to balance the darker ones. --Nina C. Davis

3.0 out of 5 stars Cast and Showalter October 24, 2012
Possessed was 3 stars Haunted was 4 stars

What it's about: After Moonrise is about a paranormal agency called After Moonrise or A.M. P.C. Cast and Gena Showalter each write a story involving the agency in some way. Cast's novella, Possessed, is about twins (one is dead and one is seeking help) and a psychic who can "sense" and track negative emotions. Haunted, by Showalter, is about an artist and a detective who both experience "blackouts" related to a serial killer.

Why you should read it: Gena Showalter is one of the authors on my must-read list, so of course I jumped at the chance to read Haunted. It's very mysterious and exciting. She doesn't skimp on the blood, gore or action. Her heroes are always hot, and her heroines are either butt-kickers or have a core of strength beneath the surface. I really enjoyed reading Haunted! Possessed was a bit harder for me. I love Cast's writing style; I've enjoyed her Goddess by Mistake series as well as most of the House of Night series. What was hard for me in this one was the twin concept. One twin is dead and haunts the other twin. The living twin "takes one for the team" and allows her dead sister to "drive" her to have relations with the hero. I won't spoil the ending but ... it was uncomfortable for me. Having said that, I still liked the writing, and the plot was appealing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Paranormal Thriller- No Spoilers October 24, 2012
I'm usually not a huge fan of novellas and short stories- I just need more there in words and plot and characters. Novellas are almost always too short for me. Here, these didn't hook me and hold my interest. I'm not sure that it wasn't me- which is why it gets three stars. I found the novellas to be grimmer than I was expecting and that kind of impacted my attitudes toward the romance and the chemistry between the couples.

The novellas are connected by a paranormal detective agency called After Moonrise- characters in each novella has connections to the agency. I thought it was an interesting idea but each novella went off into an unexpected direction. Anyway, the novellas are primarily mysteries and each has twists and turns (which is why I'm on a no spoilers bent). PC Cast's "Possessed" is the shorter novella and I thought it too brief. The ending came off as too neatly resolved. The twist wasn't much addressed in the ending. And, I couldn't help but wondering about one of the twin sister's well-being in the ending. I thought the romance was tepid- I never got much chemistry between the characters. Gena Showalter's "Haunted" was a longer, more complicated story. Here, both the mysterious lady and the detective have their own personal mysteries to solve. It was pretty well plotted and had a decently complex mystery. I liked the characters a lot more- they were pretty well-drawn. And then... big, old twist! And, for some reason, I was surprised at how grim it was. I shouldn't be- the book gave plenty of foreshadowing but I was still a little taken aback. Again, I just wasn't that into the characters' chemistry. And, post-twist, I had some real problems seeing the chemistry.

I didn't hate the book- it was okay. If you pick it up, I'd warn you to dial down your expectations for unicorns and puppies and sparkly, happy things. Because neither novella was a sparkly, happy sort of love story.

4.0 out of 5 stars After Moonrise November 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
AFTER MOONRISE --Possessed by PC Cast / Haunted by Gena Showalter

AFTER MOONRISE is an anthology (October 23, 2012 release) written by PC Cast and Gena Showalter. After Moonrise is a paranormal investigation agency and is the primary focus in both of the storylines. Norms are without any supernatural power (human) and Psys are those gifted with varying degrees of psychic ability.

3.5 stars: POSSESSED is the first storyline written by PC Cast. At nine years of age, Kent Raef discovered he was a Psy. With his ability to feel only negative emotions Kent spent several years working for the military. Now State side and living in Tulsa Oklahoma Kent is a well-respected psychic detective working for the Tulsa branch of the After Moonrise. Agency. And things are about to change for Kent when Lauren Wilcox enters his office hoping he will be able to help track her twin sister's killer. But Lauren comes with a surprise-her sister's spirit refuses to move on until her murder is solved. And it is Raef's ability to see and communicate with Aubrey that pushes the detective in more ways than one.

Aubrey and Lauren Wilcox owned their own landscaping business and three months earlier Aubrey's body was discovered at a job site-she had apparently been electrocuted on a dig. But Aubrey's spirit refuses to move on and the sisters`s relationship is slowly killing Lauren. It is not Aubrey's choice to remain but a psychic killer who has the ability to keep the spirits alive.

POSSESSED is a well-written and fast paced storyline with a HEA but it was a difficult ending for me. I knew within the first couple of chapters that I would not like the outcome of this particular storyline.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well, That Was Different. . . December 10, 2012
I picked this up because I'm a huge fan of Gena Showalter and was eager to read her contribution to this book. I had never read anything by P.C. Cast prior to this, but I began with her story.

I won't go into specific plot points, as other reviewers have covered those so well. What I will say about Cast's story is that it wasn't bad; it was very short, so there wasn't all that much in the way of character or plot development, but what there was was interesting and well-written. However, the ending was. . . not one that I can say that I enjoyed. I applaud Cast for doing something different and creative in an attempt to resolve that trope of romance novels that is so utterly cliche at this point, i.e. the dreaded love triangle. The manner in which it was resolved - if it can be even be described as being "resolved" - was done in such a way that it made me uncomfortable, as a reader, and I found myself really feeling bad for the twin who was among the living. I just didn't feel that it ended in such a way as to be fair to her in any way, shape, or form, so my overriding feeling as I finished the story was that she, her life, and her feelings really got the short end of the stick in that situation, and in the whole story, actually. So, the story was unique and well-written, but it's not something that I'd want to read again.

As for Ms. Showalter's story, I felt that it was very well-done. As always, her main female character was strong and pretty kick-butt, in nature, and the male protagonist was the requisite hot, alpha male. I liked their relationship, because they had a lot of chemistry and heat between them, and I think that it was well-developed. Then there was that twist that most of the other reviewers have mentioned.
