This is quite simply the most intense and hard-hitting British record released in the nineties, certain to be regarded as a sinister document of these corrupt times in years to come. Luke Haines's disturbing and riveting vocals, complimented by some of the most menacing guitar ever put down on tape, as well as a truly unnerving and atmospheric production, are so far above most other pop music produced at the time as to make its comparative anonymity extremely puzzling. Like the first two Auteurs records, as well as one or two of their singles (notably the title cut of the EP "Kid's Issue"), this is a record of such forcefulness and melodic and lyrical ingenuity as to be indispensible to every serious contemporary pop music fan.

Everything from glum, sprawling epics (Dead Sea Navigators, Child Brides) to snappy brit-pop (Unsolved Child Murder, After Murder Park) including a rocker or two. Haines' writing is all inference - he's smart enough to challenge the listener and allows us to fill in the missing gaps to his deliciously nasty lyrics. Whether thick with ambience or interpretative subtext, each song delights on a different level.
