5.0 out of 5 stars most venemous British pop record of the nineties
This is quite simply the most intense and hard-hitting British record released in the nineties, certain to be regarded as a sinister document of these corrupt times in years to come. 3.0 out of 5 stars Dark night of the soul for the Evil Godfather of Britpop.
This was the Auteurs third album, and was cynical even by their standards. Singer Luke Haines was wheelchair bound at the time, and certainly took no prisoners with his sneering verbal assault on anything and everything.

In true nihilistic style, grim subjects such as aircraft disasters and child murders are discussed to the background of a more brittle sound than...

5.0 out of 5 stars most venemous British pop record of the nineties, January 10, 2001

This is quite simply the most intense and hard-hitting British record released in the nineties, certain to be regarded as a sinister document of these corrupt times in years to come. Luke Haines's disturbing and riveting vocals, complimented by some of the most menacing guitar ever put down on tape, as well as a truly unnerving and atmospheric production, are so far above most other pop music produced at the time as to make its comparative anonymity extremely puzzling. Like the first two Auteurs records, as well as one or two of their singles (notably the title cut of the EP "Kid's Issue"), this is a record of such forcefulness and melodic and lyrical ingenuity as to be indispensible to every serious contemporary pop music fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grim, yet served with a wicked smile, October 25, 1998

Everything from glum, sprawling epics (Dead Sea Navigators, Child Brides) to snappy brit-pop (Unsolved Child Murder, After Murder Park) including a rocker or two. Haines' writing is all inference - he's smart enough to challenge the listener and allows us to fill in the missing gaps to his deliciously nasty lyrics. Whether thick with ambience or interpretative subtext, each song delights on a different level.

This was the Auteurs third album, and was cynical even by their standards. Singer Luke Haines was wheelchair bound at the time, and certainly took no prisoners with his sneering verbal assault on anything and everything.

In true nihilistic style, grim subjects such as aircraft disasters and child murders are discussed to the background of a more brittle sound than previous albums. However, this does not have the same songwriting quality of the classic first album 'New Wave', and is probably too dark for many. It's a patchy affair, but 'Light Aircraft on Fire', 'Land Lovers' and 'Unsolved Child Murder' (the latter track sounding like the Beatles if they'd been PURE MALEVOLENT EVIL) are absolutely classic tracks. It's worth checking out Luke Haines' new band 'Black Box Recorder' as well if you're into this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grows on you, April 28, 2000

i know nohing about the band, only what i hear on here. It sounds good. It will never be mainstream but who cares, they have basically created a niche for themselves. Sort of a cross between bowie, jeff buckley, fugazi and radiohead. It DOES grow on you each listen and its the only time you'll hear songs about sadness yet delivered with gladness.
