Editorial Reviews

Based on Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan; with score by The Master Noel Coward and headed by a star-studded cast - Mary Ellis, Vanessa Lee, Peter Graves, Graham Payn, Irene Browne, a who's-who of the then London stage, it seemed extraordinary that After the Ball only managed 188 performances. Perhaps the combination of Wilde and Coward did not work but the score is top quality and Coward supplied a charming set of lyrics. For bonus tracks we have included performances from three other Coward productions - Graham Payn singing "Matelot" and "Sigh No More" from the revue Sigh No More and selections from Pacific 1860 performed by the stars Mary Martin and Graham Payn. Also included a "live" recording introduced by Coward of Payn singing "In A Boat On A Lake With My Darling" from Ace of Clubs.

AFTER THE BALL was one of Noel Coward's most ambitious projects, an operetta version of Oscar Wilde's "Lady Windermere's Fan", with 3 of his favourite artistes in leading roles: Graham Payn, Vanessa Lee and Mary Ellis.

Graham Payn was Coward's real-life companion, who introduced Coward's "Matelot" to great success in London. Mary Ellis and Vanessa Lee were two of the greatest operatic singers of the time and to have Payn, Lee and Ellis here in AFTER THE BALL is a rare treat indeed. The show had a rocky road to the stage and closed after only 188 performances at the Globe Theatre.

The score features some of Coward's most intricate and complex compositions. Vanessa Lee's "Aria" is breathtaking and other highlights include "Light is the Heart", "All My Life Ago", "Mr Hopper's Chanty" and "Bright Clear Morning", though the entire score as a whole is amazing.

Sepia has filled out the disc with other Noel Coward delights including (yes) Graham Payn's rendition of "Matelot", Mary Martin performing "My Horse Has Cast a Shoe" from PACIFIC 1860 and joining Payn for "Bright Was the Day". Vanessa Lee performs two numbers from GAY'S THE WORD - "Finder Please Return" and "On Such a Night as This".

So wonderful that this score has finally been paid it's due.

I'm a Coward (and Wilde) fan, but I didn't like this. The reason is that I can't stand Coward's love songs. I knew better than to buy an operetta by him, and I got just what I expected. The upbeat and comedy songs are terrific, which is always the case with Coward, Sutherland (a hero, and I like Callas too, who was my introduction to opera) I read was a good friend of Coward, would go to his home and sing his songs, and I know for sure recorded a record of his songs. All she could sing effectively would be the slow or love songs, and I never heard the album and never felt the least desire to. The songs on this CD however are very well done, so if unlike me you like the sentimental Coward, you might like it. Listening to the lyrics, I was at a loss to place the songs in Wilde's play. I'm listening to the CD now and I think it is terrible. It is named "After The Ball" which is the name of a sad American song, and I like it better than any song on the album. Except one clever one,
