A film about the price of passion which flirts with profundity and ends up seeming merely fashionable. A forty-year-old book editor, contentedly married and the mother of two sons, has an affair with a tall, dark, and handsome engineer who also happens to be twenty years her junior. When this amour fou ends, the woman is unable to go on and she begins to self-destruct-until her star writer, another gorgeous young man, steps in and whisks her off to Greece, where she regains her senses. This is the sort of movie that purports to deal with such chic feminist issues as middle-aged sexual longing and the stigma of aging but that seems more at ease with chic aesthetic details-a scarf that's folded just right, tasteful sheets on a bed-than with the ungainly reality of its own unfolding drama. Co-written and directed by and starring Brigitte Roüan, who should have studied Truffaut's mesmerizingly melancholic "The Story of Adèle H." more carefully before taking on the psychology of love addiction. This is the French movie "Post coitum, animal triste" with English subtitle. When it was shown in theatre in New York city in Spring 1998, I watched it three times, because this is the perfect movie for me, with the beautiful scenes, interesting characters, story, etc. The story is about a middle aged book editor with a husband and two kids, who fell in love with a handsome young man and went destructive. It is interesting that the cover of the videotape version released in the U.S. is dark and full of hints for sex, while the cover of the version availabe in France is very bright and colorful, with the heroine herself and the background of a Greek isle under the sunshine.

It's great.

The affair between an older woman and a younger man, the impact of this on her family, and on herself when it ends, is shown in a way that is hilarious, serious, and sympathetic.

Why I liked it:
* The true awful self-centeredness of love is not avoided. There is acknowledgement of just how ridiculously we behave, but at the same time a respect for the strength of these feelings.
* The surprising way that some of the people around the affair reacted to it.

I'm considering showing it to some of my middle-aged women friends. "Look what happens when you take something like your appreciation of that waiter just a bit too far ...."

AS OBSESSED AS THE FEMALE CHARACTER IS OBSESSED WITH HER YOUNG MAN , I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS FILM. IT IS NOT ONLY AN INTERESTING TAKE ON THE SUBJECT , BUT HILARIOUS IN HER REACTION TO THE WHOLE ORDEAL. I LITERALLY CHAIN SMOKED THROUGH THE FILM .I'VE TOLD ALL MY FRIENDS ABOUT IT, THEY ARE SICK OF HEARING ABOUT IT AND WATCHING ME REINACT SOME OF THE SCENES, WHICH I DO OFTEN .I AM ABSOLUTELY CRAZY ABOUT THIS FILM. I'VE HUNTED IT DOWN IN ALL THE VIDIEO STORES, AND THEN ALMOST FELL OFF MY CHAIR WHEN I SAW AMAZON HAD IT.
