Learning for a life-time of soaring -- After Solo!, March 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: After Solo (Hardcover)
Tom Knauff is more than an author, glider flight instructor, world gliding record holder (1,023.25 miles, out and return distance, 4/25/83), or spouse of a world gliding record holder (Doris Grove, 700.4 miles, out and return distance-feminine, 9/28/81). He is a world-class soaring enthusiast and self-identified soaring student who lives by his words in the Preface: "...the solo flight is just another stepping stone toward your goal of becoming a safe, competent pilot. This new book will provide you with much of the information you need to gain your next goal, the private glider license. But remember, having this license only makes you a minimum pilot. Consider it a license to continue to learn, to advance your skills so you'll enjoy soaring even more." After Solo provides a clearly written, clearly illustrated foundation for those goals and promotes a safety-based attitude that develops older, rather than bolder pilots. Tom includes succinct discussions of off-field landing (true pearls of wisdom gleaned from years of teaching them in a motorglider) and procedures for the usual and many unusual emergency situations. He also explains the rationale behind the FAA flight test standards. This book, the sequel to Glider Basics From First Flight to Solo, is the second edition of Glider Basics From Solo to License. Those were the first books in my gliding library and have given me the most value per page. After Solo is the keystone for making the most of soaring books by Derek Piggott (Gliding, Understanding Gliding, Gliding Safety), Ken Stewart (The Glider Pilot's Manual), the late Bill Scull (Soaring Across Country), Ann Welch (New Soaring Pilot), and also Bob Wander's topic-specific Gliding Made Easy Series. -- a grateful student of Tom and Doris
