John H. Hewett has been leading churches and other nonprofit organizations for more than 33 years.
He entered ministry in 1970, serving a variety of churches in Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, and North Carolina. He presently serves as senior minister, First Baptist Church, Monroe, NC, a progressive congregation located about 30 minutes east of Charlotte.
He entered development work first as a consultant with and ultimately president of Cargill Associates, the national fundraising consulting firm, and later as Director of Development of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Vice President of Development at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Senior Vice President of Development and Marketing at the historic Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and Director of Development at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C. Since 2000 he has been president of his own consulting firm, Hewett Consulting, based in Charlotte.
A widely-traveled speaker and writer, Dr. Hewett is in frequent demand as a teacher, consultant, and facilitator. He holds degrees from Stetson University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, which awarded him the Ph.D. in Christian Ethics in 1981 in a joint program with the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He holds CFRE status in the Association of Fundraising Professionals and has served as a faculty member for the University of Pennsylvania's Certificate in Fundraising program.
He is the husband of Andrea Stevenson, president and executive director of Charlotte's Community School of the Arts, and the father of two grown sons.
