Classic Neil Young from his Heyday. Brilliant story with an ominous tone, but told in Neil's quavery, matter-of-fact nasal whine which robs the story of scariness and makes it more of a Grimm style Fairy Tale, circa 1971. Very plain but effective accompaniment to his solo lyrics. Possibly my favorite Neil Young song.

And as far as I'm concerned he'll never reach that pinnacle again. I like many of his songs. Cripple Creek Ferry is particularly good but I think 'After the Gold Rush' takes the Gold.

After the Gold Rush is the most beautiful and haunting song that Neil Young ever did in my opinion. And he did it so very perfectly. There's absolutely nothing about it I would change. I've listened to it many times and never grow tired of it.

...in 1974 with their cover of this Neil Young song. Both versions are definitely worth having in your music collection.

on two vinyl copies when I was young (a lot younger) then went through a couple of CD versions.

I love most of his work, but it doesn't get any better than this. Neil Young at his absolute best, both as a songwriter and singer.
