Book Description

In the middle of a soccer drill, in an awful, awkward moment, Celia Bennett's eight-year-old son Caleb lands on his face and chest in the grass. The diagnosis blindsides her, bringing her face-to-face with every parent's worst nightmare.

Desperate to save her son's life, Celia pursues a cure through alternative medicine, but her quest ends in frustration and disappointment. Facing despair, hope walks in on the most unlikely set of legs, when her father returns after a 30-year absence. Can she release pain to embrace hope? Will it make a difference, or is it too late?

5.0 out of 5 stars After the Snow Falls December 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
After the Snow Falls is an impelling read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from the beginning. It grabbed my heart in the first chapter and I found myself getting lost in it. I could see the story unfolding in my minds eye almost as if I was watching a movie. The characters became like friends; I rooted for Celia and for the storm that had taken over her life to come to an end ~ I laughed with her and cried with her.
Carey Jane Clark is an expressive, picturesque, dynamic author; who's writing draws her reader in from the first sentence.
You will love this story, the characters will stay with you long after the final chapter is read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well told story, held my attention. December 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Carey Jane Clark's debut novel is one of those rare finds, a well-told story with pitch-perfect descriptions and dialogue. The suspense builds without any of the melodrama so prevalent today, and her characterizations made me care about what happened to them. Good job, we'll be hearing more about Clark.

4.0 out of 5 stars After the Snow Falls December 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Celia and her husband Jeff are faced with a parent's worst nightmare. Their son Caleb is diagnosed with a brain tumor. They must enter into a world of treatment with very little hope offered for healing.

Just as Celia's life is crumbling around her she is also faced with her father coming back into her life. Alfie abandoned Celia and her mother when Celia was a young child. Alfie claims he is a "changed man". Adele, Celia's mother believes him; Celia though refuses to forgive him.

How far would a parent go to find a cure for their child? Celia explores the realm of alternative medicine while denying any spiritual intervention. Alfie wishes to share his spiritual change with Celia. He is sure that through prayer and forgiveness healing can begin.

Because of the subject matter it is hard to say, "I really enjoyed this book". But when you take it apart and examine each character you find so much to like. Chapters are alternated between Alfie and Celia. What each one is going through during this process. The author has managed to capture heart-breaking emotions of parents faced with losing their child, consequences of choices that are made and the healing power of forgiveness. So despite the subject of the book, I really did enjoy After the Snow Falls because the characters and subject captured my heart as I read.

I was taken by the writing style of Carey Jane Clark. From the beginning she sets the setting in a rural Canadian town. You feel like you're there. Then your in the head of Celia, who's very anxious mother under "good circumstances". When she watches a nightmare concerning her son, played out right in front of her, perspectives change...when tragedy strikes, we need to forgive so it doesn't weigh us down. Good book to read if you're feeling hopeless; take a journey toward hope with Celia. I'll be looking for other titles from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful First Novel December 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This was an excellent book. Clark knew her stuff. As a family battles a rare cancer, Clark made me believe someone in her family had contracted the same one. Details were wonderful, tension ran high. The grandfather/father, Alfie, was especially memorable even though he was a minor character.

I judged this for the Grace Awards and it was a close call with the ultimate winner.

I, personally, did not like the ending. It seemed a little forced for me. But on the whole, excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars After the Snow Falls November 22, 2012
Format:Paperback
As this soccer mom,Celia Bennett, rushes to get out the door and to the soccer field with her eight year old son, Caleb, she becomes overwhelmed with the responsibilities for so many of the activities she has volunteered for. One of the mom's is not answering her phone and Celia is depending on her to be there. When Celia gets to the field very stressed out,Caleb starts complaining of a headache. So her husband tries to help by getting something for his sons headache. Celia wanders around and finally she finds her friend. As Caleb takes off in a run on the soccer field, Celia is sitting in the stands trying to control the anger she feels toward her friend. Then the unexpected happens. As Caleb was running to make a shot he falls face down to the ground, unconscious. He is transported by ambulance to the hospital. What they find is not good and Celia's whole life changes in a flash. Her only child has a brain tumor and her life becomes hospital stays, tests, chemo and a room at the Ronald McDonald's House with several families in similar situations. She does not seem to be able to handle this as well as some of the other parents. Mainly because she does not have faith in God or the power of prayer. So she seeks out information about alternation treatments only available in Mexico. But Caleb does have faith in God and the ones he discusses this with are his grandparents. He wants to know if God can really heal him.

This story is an eye opener. We know these things happen but many people want to stick their heads in the sand and don't want see it or hear about IT. IT meaning cancer.

The author must have a very sensitive heart to write such a heartfelt novel. I find it hard to express my feelings about this book. It makes my heart ache!
