More About the Author

Wayne Dundee grew up and spent the first fifty years of his life around the state line area of northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin. Always an avid reader,he decided at an early age that one day he wanted to be a writer himself. Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer influenced the direction his writing would initially take -- hardboiled detective mysteries.

Dundee sold his first short story, featuring Rockford, Illinois-based PI Joe Hannibal, in 1982. Since then there have been, to date, over twenty Hannibal short stories, three novellas, and seven Hannibal novels. The Hannibal books and stories have been published in several languages and nominated for an Edgar, an Anthony, and six Shamus Awards. The most recent Hannibal novel, GOSHEN HOLE, appeared in December of 2011.
Dundee has recently also gained acclaim for his work in the Western genre. His 2010 short story "This Old Star" received the Peacemaker Award from the Western Fictioneers writers' organization. His first Western novels --- DISMAL RIVER and HARD TRAIL TO SOCORRO --- appeared in 2011. And his most recent, MANHUNTER'S MOUNTAIN, came out in January of 2012.

In 2009, Dundee retired as general manager for a small manufacturing facility and is now devoting full time to writing. Subsequent to the passing of his beloved wife Pam, Dundee shares a home in Ogallala, Nebraska, with his daughter and her family. He is working on further Joe Hannibal adventures as well as more work in the Western genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Joe Hannibal Lives, December 21, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Day After Yesterday (Five Star First Edition Mystery) (Hardcover)
I was delighted to see this new Joe Hannibal novel. His creator, Wayne Dundee, is one of my favorite writers. In this outing Joe is investigating the suspicious deaths of two of his oldest and dearest friends. In the course of the investigation he encounters a full stew of mystery and suspense ingredients: lost love, new-found love, some creepy government types, some old reliable government types, some terrorists, some good cops, a bad cop, a wealthy rancher with his private militia . . . you name it, it's here. And it all works. The Nebraska atmospherics are excellent. The narrative pace is perfect. The characters are memorable. The resolution is more than satisfactory. As always, Wayne adds a pinch or two of violence and a tablespoon of sex. Feel the love. And welcome Joe back.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting Great Plains conspiracy thriller, September 21, 2007
This review is from: The Day After Yesterday (Five Star First Edition Mystery) (Hardcover)
From Ogallala, Nebraska Abby Bridger calls private investigator Joe Hannibal to inform him her Uncle Bomber Brannigan and his companion Liz Grimaldi died in a nearby car crash. A stunned Joe leaves his home Rockford, Illinois to attend the funeral of his two best friends.

Nine days after the funeral, an upset Abby calls Joe informing him something is not right about the deaths of Bomber and Liz. Deputy Clint Barnstable was the first law enforcement official on the scene and he reported alcohol and the pair were having sex when they took a turn way too fast. Abby and Joe know Bomber cannot drink and would not, and that the pair were close buddies but not lovers; someone rigged the crime scene. Joe agrees to return to the Cornhusker state to investigate, not yet realizing that he will soon be dealing with a militia, Homeland Security agents, an enigmatic undercover Fed, and a Russian terrorist; but none of that matches his female troubles or the need to rescue Abby's kidnapped child.

This is an interesting Great Plains conspiracy thriller starring a hard boiled private investigator skirmishing with the government, the militia, and a terrorist. The subplot involving Joe with his estranged girlfriend is well written; however his romantic involvement with Abby feels more like a sub-genre requirement that detracts from an otherwise strong tale of betrayals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nail-Biting Action, Suspense, December 5, 2010
This review is from: The Day After Yesterday (Five Star First Edition Mystery) (Hardcover)
PI Joe Hannibal is torn by grief when his friends Bomber Brannigan and Liz Grimaldi are killed in an apparent auto accident on a visit to Bomber's sister in Nebraska.

But grief turns to anger when Abby Bridger, Bomber's niece, calls shortly after the funeral and informs Joe of gossip casting aspersions on the character of his friends. The news conflicts with what he knows of them and Joe heads back to Nebraska, determined to root out the truth.

Teaming up with Abby, they confront a murderous conspiracy which puts them on a collision course with rightwing militia, a dangerous terrorist, the FBI and Homeland Security. Things go from bad to worse when Abby's nine-year-old son is kidnapped.

In the midst of all this, Joe is torn by the wrenching revelation his long relationship with Jan Mosby has crashed and probably burned.

Get set for nail-biting action and suspense as Joe and Abby work to sort things out with the help of a few unexpected allies.
