When Sinister broke up after Savage or Grace I was not too bummed out. The main reason is that cd was really weak. I have followed the band since Cross the Styx. They were one of the best death metal bands right up until Creative Killings. That is when they got another new vocalist, the female, who sang on that cd and Savage or Grace. Both cd's were weak, not living up to their past brutality. Gone were the blast beats and in place were rather tame and boring songs to say the least, as well as a less than stellar guitar sound. Enter Afterburner, the new inception of the band and what a start. Aad is no longer drumming, but took up the vocal dept. and he does an excellent job. The cd is a return, sort of, to their old stuff. Their is a lot of blasts on the cd and slower parts too. I would compare this cd to HATE, just a bit because the songs are a little longer on this cd, like they were on HATE. The brutality is back, the trademark razor like guitar sound is back and some technical elements as well. This is a new revamped Sinister and still one of the best overseas death metal bands.

First of all, the sound quality is nearly flawless. The music is in-your-face and with all the instruments clear. The drums should have been a just a little stronger in the mix.
Aad's vocals are about average: There is some of that death-and-dumb quality which plagues Death Metal vocals, but he's far better in this respect than Benton of Deicide and there's no high pitched screechy gargage.
The songs are long and varied with high speed blasting segments and slower and sometimes rather melodic parts as well. Fortunately, the melodic aspect is small.
There's excellent inventiveness with the guitar sound in this album. For example, during a speaking part on 'The Grey Massacre' there's a kind of erie epic sound to the thudding guitars before they start blitzing again to end the song; this is an aspect of music making that I highly appreciate.
There's no filler on this album: all 8 songs are good to excellent.
I rate "Afterburner" as the fourth best Sinister album behind their first three superb efforts.
Overall, 4 1/2 stars.

Anyone into death metal during the 21st century should know that the genre's glory days are long over. None of the recent releases from Suffocation, Deicide, Incantation, Obituary, etc. are genre defining timeless classics like anything off their back catalogue. That said, these new albums serve to pay tribute to the glory days, not doing anything new, but each group has attempted to recreate the best elements of their sounds as a representation of what death metal was back when it was a cutting edge form of music. One of the best of these new albums comes from Sinister, who after a period of obscurity, return with a new line-up and an album that recalls the best moments from Hate, Diabolical Summoning, and Aggressive Measures. Aad as vocalist does his best to sound like Mike as he did on Cross The Styx, and with Alex on guitars, the bouncy playful elements that made Sinister unique are back as well. Also, for the first time in awhile the group receives a decent production on a album. While not as good as Hate, this album is at least as good as Aggressive Measures and hopefully will win them a place as one of death metals veterans in the twilight hour of the genre.

Best cd they have put out in years, extremly under rated. Harsh vocals heavy/grindy sound yet extremly catchy.
