Deep House from the City That Never Sleeps.,
By The Groove (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Afterdark New York City (Audio CD)
The formula is this: two DJs from New York deliver a mix of deep house on two discs, one by Jon Cutler and the other by Osunlade. Both are deep excursions of vocal house with a soulful edge that's best suited for late night listening. On Cutler's disc, you're gonna find noteworthy tracks like his own "You're Not Alone," Johnny D and Nicky P's "Johnick Fire," and Scott Wozniak's "Wake Up My Life" which serve as the highlights. Osunlade's disc has a more chilled vibe, with laidback cuts such as the Latin-lite fare of "Cafe Sol" by Alistar Calling, Tortured Soul's "I Might Do Something," and "Remember" by The Moves. But the pace does pick up later in the disc with more aggressive numbers like Soul Vision's kicking "Don't Hold Back." All in all, there's nothing earth-shattering on this disc, and many househeads will recognize familiar ground. But "AfterDark NewYorkCity" is good enough to rise above the average. One last thing: this CD is copy-protected, so computer freaks who like to burn and mix their music will be out of luck with this disc.

The dawning of light music,
By
This review is from: Afterdark New York City (Audio CD)
Even if the title suggests this is a moody, deep type of compilation, it has enough yang to move your soul and booty...it kicks off with a smooth voice, has a nervous drum beat and a simple and cool keyboard in the back, then the rhythm picks up with a great percussion transition for an even jazzier voice. "Alone" has a house like feel to it still with world class vocals. From there on, the rich array of pleasures is ensured on a impeccable tempo: Brazilian beats (the energizing Only you, the marvelous bossa feel of Sintra, Cafe Sol), sexy voices (Wake up my life), a mean bass (Johnick fire), 70's like disco (Pride), clubby hip trends (Fluid, Don't hold back, If you leave now) and other singable tunes (anything from Tortured Soul or Moves). The mark of this album is it's live-like feel of the music played. It has a great balance between the danceable and the audible. It's if you want a "juiced up" lounge/jazz version of what remains in the end a little musical gem that will leave you content with the groove of life.

Disappointment from NYC,
By DM "morrina" (Boston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Afterdark New York City (Audio CD)
I have purchased all of the Afterdark CDs, and this one is really disappointing. I was expecting more from the Deep House center of the music world. I have yet to find a CD that measures up to the San Fran disc. Buy that one! If they could only replicate that....
