This review is from: Afterglow (Audio CD)
This sort of one-man (Martin Wheeler) synth stuff lives or dies on the groove, and this guy has a pretty good one going in "Lost", "Crush" and "Hush", a pulsing, soft but intense vibe, in which he inserts some echo vocals that fit very well. But that's the exception unfortunately, and most of the tracks don't work, particularly the opening track and "Last Day", which go nowhere and are littered with squeaks and clicks that sound like 2AM fiddling and should never have left his Mac. "Far", "Rusting" and other songs commit the sin of not maintaining a beat, it's death for this stuff to stop and start, you can't listen that close to noodling around, it has to form a background wall to be effective. "Long" and "Afterglow" are extended wastes of ambient nothing. Too bad, there are times where he gets it going pretty good, but overall this is pretty much a total miss.
