4.0 out of 5 stars Be Aware of These Differences... and then enjoy!
1. This is the UNMIXED version of this CD. There are silent gaps between tracks for DJ use. Go here:

2. This CD is VERY different from the original Afterhours mix by GU. It is much more uptempo and not as trippy.

Afterhours 1 is the late night/early morning Opus after a good night out. AH5...

One song, The Pines "Cold", bears any resemblance to Afterhours 1 and 2. It's a great song. Great. These mixes are good for discovering artists you might not otherwise hear so I'll be checking out The Pines.

Afterhours 3 was ok but that bizarro trippy spookiness that made the first two such standouts was gone. Afterhours 4 was not trippy either but contained a handful of good tracks. This one is just club tunes, upbeat, electro techno all the way.

Don't get me wrong, there are some good songs to be found here (though there is a lot of fodder here as well...). It just lacks the continuity and trippy mood of the first two sets.

After hours? Nah. This is middle of the night club stuff. Unless Afterhours is no longer associated with coming down after a night out but is associated with a banging beat for banging, well, you know...then maybe the title works. If you like that kind of thing, you might like it, but if you're looking for Afterhours 1 and 2, this isn't it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Afterhours or Waiting Room Music, January 19, 2009
This review is from: Afterhours 5 (Audio CD)
It was okay for Global Underground to try something different after the first four releases of afterhours. However, it gets a little out there. I felt that listening to the first disc was waiting room music that could be used in the waiting room going good with reading a magazine while waiting for an appointment. In other words, it's boring. The 2nd disc was on and off and the third disc was good. I wouldn't hestitate to leave this item. There could be better.

It is ok, but I bought the wrong set of cd's. This is the extended 4 cd's version for DJ's and I should've buy the 3 cd's mixed version, what I did later (didn't arrived yet, I'll tell you then).

Afterhours 1 is the late night/early morning Opus after a good night out. AH5 has some of the dark basslines, psychotic vocals, and general crazyness of AH1 but you could listen to it even if your brain isn't scrambled.

AH5 has lots of really fun and interesting tracks that range from 80's electro to dark house to intelligent trance. The track selection of this CD is really top notch and I find AH5 to be more danceable than most of what I bought in 2007 and 2008... especially considering the minimal/dumb electro movement going on currently (yeah, I'm talking to you Digweed and Seaman).

If you get either version of AH5 you will not be disappointed. I prefer the mixed version better because it really is a twisting turning journey of cool music.

I gave it 4 stars because I believe 5 stars should only be reserved for the greatest comps of all time (NE 1+ 2, Ren: Awakenings, GU 13+14, AH1). But otherwise this was a great addition to my collection.
