Product Description

Welcome to Afterlife, the world-building simulation that lets you create the hereafter in the here and now. Possessed of an unearthly sense of humor, it all begins in a god-knows-where galaxy. As a "regional spiritual director" your task, given to you by the Powers That Be, is to develop two prime plans of "unreal estate" - heaven and hell - simultaneously! Keep billions of souls happy by giving them the rewards - and punishments they deserve! The wages of sim are plentiful! Open up your afterlife with the Pearly Gates of Heaven or the Fiery Gates of Hell, zone for the Seven Deadly Sins and/or their respective Virtues. Then lay down some roads. Soon, the dearly departed will arrive in droves. Keep them in your afterlife and you flourish. Lose too many along the way and it may mean a visit from the Four Surfers of the Apocalypso (not a good time!) Factor in a half-dozen or so supernatural disasters (not including total annihilation), money problems and headaches from the planet and you're in for infinite hours of gameplay! Afterlife includes over 200 artistically rendered rewards and punishments, nearly 300 detailed tiles and buildings, more maps, graphs and charts that you can shake a pitchfork at, plus the most sophisticated engine of any sim game beginning with the letter A!

4.0 out of 5 stars Old school strategy dressed up in original clothes, April 28, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Afterlife (CD-ROM)
Afterlife is one of few attempts at strategy from Lucasarts. When Afterlife came out it didn't quite recieve the success it deserved. The original idea and wonderfully zany asthetics hold up well even today, and the music is heavenly. I used to play the demo over and over again just to listen to the wonderfully gloomy music.
Overall the game has an eerie and very unique atmosphere to it. And although the game is filled with humour, it's also quite bittersweet in many ways, since it's ultimately about heavy things like death and sin. I also like that the game is quite free of religious interference. There is no particular religion at play here, but instead Lucasarts has created its own universe, with its own religions and its own mythology.
Although the gameplay might contain way too much micromanagment to be entirely satisfactory, this is a game everyone should give a try. It's definitely one of the most artistic games I've ever played, even if the actual gameplay is a bit flawed.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Enemy Nations, then you should love this game !, July 22, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Afterlife (CD-ROM)
There are so many scenarios you can come up with, I don't see how you can get bored. When you first start out, stick with the mortal plodding mode, until you understand what you're doing. After about a week it will become second nature to you, or sooner than that if you pick new things up quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love., May 12, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Afterlife (CD-ROM)
This game has SO much to read and so much to do. The micromanagement can get a little tedious at times, but all in all, this is worth countless hours of enjoyment. The detailed descriptions of all the rewards and punishments kept me laughing for ages. This game was way ahead of its time and way too much fun. Still very much worth playing!
