A superb musical journey, July 2, 2009
If you want to get the whole beautiful picture, just buy the whole thing. It's not to say the songs can't be enjoyed piece-meal, for surely they can, but if you're a music head like me, and care about how the band but together this record, I'd say get it all. And listen. Then listen again. Find yourself opening slowly into it, then soon becoming a part of their world. It's a good thing. Like remembering those seminal times growing up when music blew your mind. Elysian Fields does that to you. The Afterlife is a work of subtle genius and beauty. Songs like "climbing my dark hair", "where can we go but nowhere" and "ashes in winter light" make your heart sore and soar as well. It's a fine thing that music this good still is being created. It's romantic, moody, sexy, thoughtful, and deep, and like all good music, takes you on an amazing journey.
