New singer, new style, but much better!, October 4, 2001
This review is from: Afterlife (Audio CD)
First of all I have to agree with the other reviewer, this album is too short! Now lets move on. I am a very loyal fan to HammerFall and Nocturnal Rites (a swedish hard rocker must love swedish hard rock). When I bought this CD I was already a steddy Noc-fan and when I saw that the lead singar was a new one, I got a little disappointed. But Jonny Lundkvist did his work well! He is no Ronnie James DIO or Bruce Dickinson but he`s not far away. With that kind of voice you don`t need backup singers, no sir! Exellent vocals! "Afterlife" is nothing like the other three previously albums, "In a time of blood and fire", "Tales of mystery and imagination" and "The Sacred Talisman". This album is harder, louder, faster and better. The first track (and the title), "Afterlife", is the best song. With an exellent riff in the beginning and a chorus that makes you wanna blow your speakers away! "Wake up dead" follows and is a little bit slower, but will still wanna make you turn up the volume. "The sinner`s cross" and "Hell and back" has lovable guitar riffs and exellent (!) chorus. "The sign" has almost everything; a deep rhythm, a incredible guitar solo, a heart breaking prechorus but a nasty chorus. That is the only thing that`s bad on this album. "The Devil`s child" (now we`re talking!) is the second best song on the album, I just love it! Everytime I hear it I just wanna scream. I have played it so much and so loud that even my neighbours is beginning to sing along with it. "Genetic Distortion Sequence" is not as complicated as it seems. It`s like all the other songs, hard, heavy and goooood! "Sacrifice", "Temple of the dead" and "Hellennium" are the third best songs, yes all three. An exellent ending! If you don`t own this album (shame on you!) then go and buy it at once and show your neighbours no mercy!

Unrelenting, magical, immensely creative...MUST have, January 25, 2001
This review is from: Afterlife (Audio CD)
Am I the first to review this album? Then please let me be the first to say this album is near the greatest thing in the history of heavy metal! I picked up this CD after hearing the third song, "The Sinner's Cross," on a TV music station. I thought the song was excellent...maybe it was a cover of some old Helloween song or something. WRONG! This album is totally original. From start to finish, 40 minutes and 50 seconds of pure, bestial, beautiful power metal. Not one second of this CD is a waste of time or musical space. The title track is fast, thought-provoking, and gorgeous. "The Sinner's Cross" is an unforgettable, undeniable STAPLE of fist-pumping power metal. The album doesn't lose any tenacity as it plows through 7 more riff-laden, lyrically masterful tunes. "Hellenium" is a fantastic finish to the album. Jonny Lindkvist's voice will nail you to your seat. The guitars will make your jaw drop. The drums will pound through your skull. The bassist brings it all together. Just when you think you've heard enough of this album, you'll find another song to be your favorite. Even though you will never EVER get tired of this chunk of gold, you will wistfully say to yourself, "This CD is waaaaaay too short!" But if you are looking for the best all-around power metal album, do yourself a favor, hey, do me a favor, and buy this CD. (Original CD available without 11th song.)
