About the Author

James was born in Pensacola, Florida and grew up fishing, swimming and scuba diving in the crystal clear water of Morrison's Spring and hunting and exploring the swamps of the Choctawhatchee (Choc-taw-hatchee) River that runs from Alabama, through the Florida Panhandle, to the Choctawhatchee Bay near Ft Walton Beach and Destin. Music was the creative spark that began a lifetime journey as a writer, musician and songwriter. He began writing songs after learning to play guitar at age 10 and continued performing with various rock bands throughout high school and college. Chasing a fascination with airplanes, James joined the USAF and was selected for an assignment with the Quick Strike Reconnaissance Test Project, Tactical Air Warfare Center, Eglin AFB, Florida. After the USAF, he toured with a professional rock band as second lead guitar. Surrendering to the fact that bills must be paid, James turned to his electronics skills and accepted a job in the Defense Industry, and later, with the US Government. He also continued pursuing aviation and earned his pilot's wings in 1982. His Aftermath Series is a fiction, action-adventure of both science fiction and fact. The characters are realistic, diverse and complex. The story takes the reader on a fascinating journey into the lives of a small group of people who are fighting for survival in a very different world from the one we know, and yet a world to which we can relate... battling terrorism.

This review is from: Aftermath 1 (Paperback)
James Graves's "Aftermath 1" (I know, should be underlined or italics, not possible here) is in desperate need of help from an experienced proofreader. A basic law of all communications is that the burden of comprehension is on the sender, and grammar, spelling, and punctuation enable comprehension, modern "individualism" notwithstanding. There are so many language-structure and spelling errors in this work that it is readable only with difficulty. Even those who spent twelve years of public school failing English recognize proper grammar, and expect it when they try to read something. When proper grammar is absent from a work, the "sense" and "purpose" of the story become lost in the failure to "flow" in reading.
The story is basically interesting, working from current events and, though somewhat dated, reaches a logical sequence of events and "fits" with current history. Some of the scenes and events feel a bit over-contrived, "forced" to fit a preset goal and not allowed to "happen." Mr. Graves just needs more practice, and a review of grammar and spelling and "literary standards" for this book to succeed. He perhaps needs to spend more time rereading his own work, and comparing it with the works of other current "best-seller" authors. I'll not buy the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, April 14, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Aftermath 1 (Paperback)
Aftermath1, Fight for Survival to simply put, is a fun book to read. The author clearly completed extensive research for the material of this book. It's exciting how the author merged vintage aircraft with todays aircraft in the twists of this story. The book offers excitement, laughs, and some romance with believable characters you can't help but root for and hope all works out in a devastated world. It's definetly one of those books you don't want to put down. When you have to, you'll be eager to return to see what is happening and how the story unfolds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for lovers of military hardware, February 29, 2004

This review is from: Aftermath 1 (Paperback)
A suspenseful, easy reading book. The storyline was very entertaining and not so far-fetched that it couldn't happen and end life as we know it today.

Some of the scenes were so well written that I was sorry they ended. Some of the scenes were a little lacking in detail, but not so prevalent that you should not read this book.

If you like action and know a little about military hardware then this book if for you.
