Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

While Joseph doesn't accept Mayan prophecies as divine decree, he isn't quite prepared to dismiss them outright. In his view, 2012 is "best understood as the crescendo of a metamorphic process already under way," because "apocalypse is in the air." Describing himself as a "doomsayer," not a "naysayer," he eschews global warming as the greatest threat to mankind today in favor of a massive burst of solar activity, a crack in the earth's magnetic shield that destroys the world's electric-generating power, acts of terrorism, a nuclear event, or any number of other grim scenarios with consequences devastating enough to challenge the global population's will to survive. Joseph sees the prophecies associated with 12/21/12 as "a compelling shorthand for the possibility of civilization-altering cataclysm and/or revelation within our lifetimes," and urges readers to begin developing "a family emergency plan now" that includes insuring a supply of fresh water, food, weapons (a matter of personal choice), and spirituality ("unless you're into void and oblivion"). With this rehash of his previous alert (Apocalypse 2012: An Investigation Into Civilization's End), Joseph tills familiar ground and straddles the precarious line between real historical investigation and "the sky is falling" hysteria.

What sets this book (as well as Lawrence's first book on 2012, Apocalypse 2012) apart from most 2012 books? This is based purely on interviews with scientists who know what is coming down on, or around, 2012. With very little citation of Mayan predictions or Biblical prophecies, and zero reference to channeled predictions, this book has water-tight evidence of what even hard core skeptics cannot refute.

This book tells you flat out why you need to prepare for disaster, or prepare for death.

Lawrence admits, even hopes, that he may be wrong...there is about a 50% chance that 2012 could come and go like January 2000, when all the Y2K fears were fortunately laid aside. But that time, people could prevent it by working hard. This time, there is almost nothing humans can do to prepare for solar flares which could disrupt the entire electric and satellite grid....breaking down not only electricity but also the Internet which we have become so dependent on.

Other possible disasters are mentioned, including comets, flooding, and the collapse of bees. After reading this book I am no longer as fearful about the bee thing: Lawrence assures us we can use green houses with blowers that pollinate the vast number of produce that depend on bees, though I am sure the cost of food will increase. (Bees work for free.) There is an entire chapter on global warming, and I am glad that the naysayers' view is also presented, showing that global warming, as bad as it is, is not merely due to humans but in fact is part of a cycle. (Lawrence omits the fact that other planets in our solar system are also heating up, though they don't have cars and factory farms!

Within three years the most mysterious or miraculous events of all time may unfold or not. Will it be "Curtains" or "Heaven" Act.I? No one knows, but Lawrence Joseph has another book that's a page turner. And he is no stranger to space or science and research. The author provides the reader with a bird's eye view of the various threats we face such as energy, hackers, pandemics, and surprisingly, climate change is not the most urgent threat. All is described in proper perspective and with scientific research. Also this is in layman's terminology. The possible scenarios are countless, most of them are unthinkable, but Lawrence wades in. Better to examine all the threats now while we can. In his previous book (for example) he reports of the Russian scientists discovery that our Solar System is entering an "interstellar energy cloud" which may last for three thousand years and might be beneficial, but it's too soon to know. However, he feels that solutions can be found for other emergencies. He describes the current state of our satellite system. And fully explains the threat to our Power Grid and how to mitigate the damage from solar flares and CME's. This information is compelling but requires new transformer installations asap. I always enjoy the author's fine humour, candor, personal stories and excellent investigative reporting. This book "Aftermath" is not really alarmist, but a sober eye opener.A good read too. Enjoy.

This book is a great disappointment there is little to no real information on disaster preparedness or survival skills. Unless you consider praying to be your only survival skill needed. There is some fluff on 2012 but little more.

This is a rambling stream of consciousness book with little background research and even less information on surviving 2012. Just another attempt to cash in on people's fears about 2012 predictions.

This book lacks "Science" almost completely. In Jan 2013, this guy will put out yet another "death coming soon!" book and rack in the cash.

If you believe this crap, you deserve to be suckered.

Previous Works

Strawberry Fields Forever: John Lennon Remembered (Bantam Books, 1980) (co-writer). Written, typeset, printed and distributed twelve days after John Lennon's assassination, this Bantam "instant book" became a NY Times bestseller and was sold globally.

American Lifestyles for the 1980's (Packaged Facts, Inc., New York, NY 1981) This marketing study examined American social and cultural trends and projected their impact on the consumption of consumer goods throughout the 1980's.

Amerika, (Simon & Schuster, 1987) (co-writer). This novelization of the 14-hour ABC miniseries, on which I also served as creative editor, became a NY Times bestseller and was sold internationally.

More than any other project, this book, arising from my November, 1986 article on Gaia in The New York Times Magazine, has defined my career. Over the past twenty years, I have since written and lectured on the Gaia movement at UNCED, the 1992 United Nations "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janeiro, at two American Geophysical Union Chapman conferences on the Gaia Hypothesis (San Diego, 1988; Valencia, Spain, 2000) on Surtsey, the youngest island in the world, an ecological preserve at the southwestern tip of the Icelandic archipelago, New York City, Prague, Beirut and many other locations.

Common Sense: Why It's No Longer Common (Addison-Wesley, 1994) This book enabled me to pursue a brief career as a common sense consultant, with such clients as the United Nations Development Programme (assignment in Bogota, Colombia), and the American Society for Industrial Security.
