Good Collection of Sexy Stories,
This review is from: Afternoon Delight: Erotica For Couples (Paperback)
Like most of Alison Tyler's books, this one also includes lots of great stories about couples having some hot sex. All of the stories in this book vary in length, (in 170 pages, there are 24 different stories) but all of the stories are set between a serious (or married) couple having sex. It's definitely a nice, hot collection of erotica - there's no doubt about that, but I just don't feel like there's anything too unique and extremely arousing compared some of the stories I've read in Alison Tyler's other compilations. It's still a great book full of lots of sexy stories, but I wouldn't call it one of her best. For a great book that can be read out loud to a partner though, this works amazingly.

My husband and I enjoyed some stories... But most had at least one element we didn't! We are not into violence, cheating, or things like that. . . I mean, we like to be a little naughty, but come on. I got this thinking it'd be couple-ish since it's for couples, but it's mostly not. And I think whoever compiled these was obsessed with spanking. . .
If anyone has a recommendation for something we might like better, it would be much appreciated! :)

Moderately erotic, mildly entertaining,

When it comes to erotica I tend to have very restrictive tastes. I like clearly heterosexual encounters with couples or threesomes. I have no stomach for gratuitious violence, sadism, or victimization of any kind. Most of the stories in this collection are inline with my personal taste, but none of them is dramatically erotic or deeply entertaining. It is not a collection I would want to share with my wife because there is very little romance, very little color, and only shallow, predictable emotional content.
D.H. Lawrence stunned the literary world by revealing our deepest secrets. Emmanuelle Arsan captivated her readers by bringing to life their most cherished fantasies. Compared to these masters of the erotic arts, "Afternoon Delight" is little more than an adolescent's secret journal. It is in our sexuality that the truest nature of humanity is revealed and erotica should illuminate this. Afternoon Delight settles for minor titillation and shallow adherence to conventional eroticism.

Fantastic book. Real stories about real people. I can see myself in some of them and can imagine myself in the rest.Really juicy reading. Have a look at Elizabeth Chamberlain's Absolute Erotica: The Definitive Collection that's really juicy also.

Afternoon Delight is a collection of 24 short erotic stories, one for each hour of the day. The stories are primarily heterosexual couples, but don't think for a moment that Alison Tyler would every bring us a book with only straight vanilla sex. Afternoon Delight includes kinky games, fetishes, fun with food, role-playing and some light bondage. The authors included some favorites from other collections edited by Alison Tyler, and some names I didn't recognize but will be happy to see in the future My favorite stories in the book were After Midnight by Nikki Magennis. All of her stories have at least one line in them that hooks me and stays with me. Alison Tyler's contribution, Morning, Noon and Night, was a very sexy read that turned out to be sweeter than expected. It made me smile. I also enjoyed Ric Amadeus' Forbidden Fruit. But I do have a soft spot for nerdy hippies. With 24 stories to choose from, you can always skip any that aren't your cup of tea. Sky rockets in flight....

A collection of 24 hours of sex,

I enjoy well written erotica.
Alison Tyler, editor (and writer!) of a number of collections of erotica, once again returns to the fray with this volume. Despite its title, this collection is really about stories and vignettes that span all hours of the day with various characters. The sex is almost resolutely heterosexual partnerships. Even if that seems like a limitation, the wide variety of stories provided by the authors explore the theme throughout an entire day. Like sonnets which restrict the length and style of a poem, the authors have risen to the challenges and bounds set by the collection's nature. Nothing really gets hardcore, its definitely a "light" anthology of erotica. Like any anthology, some of the stories were more interesting than others, and some stories were more arousing than others. I read all of the stories, but some of the stories, personally, I would definitely and have read again and again. The wide variety of authors vary from authors who seem to be in many of Ms. Tyler's collections (e.g. Rachel Kramer Bussel, Sommer Marsden, Kristina Wright...(no bad thing, they are talented)) to brand new authors. Unlike some collections of this nature which seem to completely freeze out male writers, this collection has a reasonable minority of its writers as male. Those who seek much more "hardcore" erotica, with taboo and boundary pushing limits, are going to be awfully disappointed in this anthology. Even with mild bondage and roleplay and gentle D/s themes in these stories, they will find it all too tame for their taste. On the other hand, I think that a reader who has always wanted to try erotic fiction but has been embarrassed by what she might find should try Afternoon Delight. With this set of stories in a limited and constricted theme and range of stories, it works very well as a "first timers" anthology of erotic fiction, and a good indication of the writing ability of the authors, and the editorial hand of the anthology's creator. They certainly will find the stories in this book much better written than a furtively purchased "Penthouse Variations" anthology found in the dusty corner of a used book store. Fans of Ms. Tyler's anthologies, or of the authors will of course want to pick up this volume and enjoy the stories therein, as I have done.

Mmmm... mmmmm... mmmmm good. This is yet another erotic collection that I read too fast because I just couldn't help myself. What stood out about this collection was that each story, less one, involved only two people. However, that did nothing to stop the eroticism that dripped from page to page. I must have read this book twice as I was reading it once. Reading about sex is fun. Imagining sex while about reading sex is arousing. Switching places with the characters in the story you're reading is lustfully decadent. The intimate description of sex makes you feel like a voyeur. The feelings brought on by such raw passion will make you so randy that rabbits will be like, "wow"!
I love to escape and Alison's collections are my very own personal island in the Bahamas. Of course the natives are all women, all nude, all nymphs... but you know. :-) My favorites: `Early Birds' `Country Pleasures' (my favorite) `Nooner' `Chloe's Confession' `Popsicle in the Library' (second favorite) `To Feel Sexy' `View of a Room' `Date at South Sation' `Night Shift'

This was a fairly fun and exciting collection of vanilla stories for the heterosexual couple. I especially liked the story by Alison Tyler, the editor.

This book has a few stories that are fun to read out loud to your partner, but most of them do not hold one's interest. There is one story in particular after which my boyfriend said: "That's it?!"

Around The Clock,

He got to start reading it before I did. Cold, winter night. My husband and I tucked in bed to stay warm. I don't remember what book I had, but he was reading "Afternoon Delight", edited by Alison Tyler. It had just come a couple of days before. After a few stories, he closed the book and snuggled up to me. Guess he liked what he read.
The intro starts "Imagine twenty-four hours of sex" and if you have good self-control I imagine you could read one story (just one now) each hour of a day. But I bet you can't. Though I do admit it is not easy to read more than a few at a time. Because, well, because. One does need to rest. If you're the sort of couple that reads to each other (we're not), this volume of "erotica for couples" would make some great bedtime reading material. The stories in this volume vary in length, so you can slip in a quickie read while your bedmate brushes their teeth or get involved with a longer story that may be difficult to finish, especially if someone is trying to distract you. This happened to me while reading "On Island Time" by Kristina Wright. I did finish it, but he made it quite hard to concentrate on those last few paragraphs. Most are very evocative. Here's a brief sample. "After Midnight" by Nikki Magennis, whose last line reminded me of moon-washed nights I've known - "it's enough to make the moon blush." "Square Loophole" by Craig J. Sorensen lets the first rays of sun illuminate modesty - "There is always time for touch later." "Early Birds" by Rachel Kramer Bussel compensates us for the rude awakening by construction workers. "Another Hole Week" by Jeremy Edwards made me smile remembering how attracted I am to the holes in my husband's ratty work clothes. Hehehe. "Knit One, Purl Two" by Jacqueline Applebee - which I read while sitting in my rocker - made me want to pick up my knitting needles again. And in "Morning, Noon, And Night" Alison Tyler delights us with a lovely twist. All the stories are great - no duds. And I'd love to tell you what I liked about each single one, but neither of us has time for that. So grab your headphones, a ripe, organic apple, a disco ball, some knitting needles and head for the picture window. You'll want to stay up all night. |
