This review is from: Afternoon Tea at the Beijing Opera (Paperback)
While I thought the book wasn't bad, I would not recommend it for a casual follower of Beijing Opera or for someone looking to learn about the artform itself. This book is mostly a history of the big names (like Mei Lanfang) that have shaped Beijing Opera to be what it is today. If you want to read about them, then this is the book for you. If not, this book is probably just gonna lose you as it references a lot of plays and terms without much context. I found it hard to follow at times, and I've been studying Beijing Opera for years.
