5.0 out of 5 stars Thumping from start to finish
I read about this album in URB and had to buy it that day. I didn't even know it was out until I saw a write-up on it. It was hidden behind some other cds but I am glad I fished it out! I have listened to it start to finish 5 times since I bought it and it just keeps getting better. It has just enough variety to keep me interested all the way through. It sure does hit low...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, just not my favorite.
Aphrodite never sold out, in fact, he helped pioneer the sound which has come to be what defines west-coast D'n'B for alot of people, and alot of people like it (including me). While this has certainly made him very successful as an artist and dj, it doesn't equate to him being a sell-out. He used to be a sell-out until now with a new, radio-friendly sound? That's one...

That's one confused kid.
Aphrodite's style on this disc is a more aggressive hip-hop influnced one than on his older stuff that I own, most notably The Takeover Bid - Round One and his eponemous release. Both of those have what I'd call a rave-ier sound than this one, more electronic and upbeat (not to be confused with up-tempo). Personally I liked those works better than this one, especially at the time when they were released.
This time, we get alot more hip-hop. I like hip-hop, especially older stuff and underground, but that doesn't mean that I like my D'n'B saturated with it. I agree with the other reviewers here that all of the colaborations are pretty cool, but I don't feel that Aphrodite necessarily "needs" it, as he's capable of doing great work on his own. I can't help but feel that hip-hop is taken for granted these days as an automatic way to gain street cred. Great if you're a true hip-hop artist ~ maybe questionable if you're not. As far as Aphrodite, I'll leave that up to the listener to decide for themself where he falls. And while I would certainly agree that this a darker sound for Aphrodite, I think that buying this disc expecting dark side would be disappointing; it certainly gets alot darker than this.
Overall, this disc isn't bad. If you're a fan of his earlier stuff but aren't a big fan of hip-hop, you may want to pass on this one. Otherwise, you might really like it (and should check out Pish Posh for more good state side jump-up d'n'b).

The man went from a sell-out to this stable and solid release. Aftershock FINALLY shows that Aphrodite is still here. It rebuilds itself nicely with a radio friendly vibe and a hip hop feel. But it never lets go of the dark side.

Give it a shot... you just might forgive Aphrodite for being a remix junkie.

NOTE: He needs to thank the colabos on this record - they save it from being a generic train wreck.

"See Thru It" is the stand-out track. ENJOY!

2.0 out of 5 stars wheres the bass, June 2, 2010
This review is from: Aftershock (Audio CD)
i thought buying a DnB album would ensure i get my 2500 watt sound system to shatter the windows in my car but it simply wasn't there....the music was produced well and the beats were very eclectic but they simply lacked the bass in terms of mega hertz. not really much else to say. i'm a bass fanatic and if the music is good but the beat doesn't hit hard it takes away from the overall effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars The CD is great....., September 22, 2005
This review is from: Aftershock (Audio CD)
I don't know what that DJ is complaing about this CD being mediocre. Just because you can't spin some of this music in the clubs it doesn't render Aphrodite mediocre. I personally enjoy this
cd: Off limits, See thru, Hoochie, and so on. You may come to this some of these tracks a bit hard to spin for a wider audience (dj's perspective) but you'll enjoy the beats (dancer's perspective).

5.0 out of 5 stars Gggreat, June 13, 2004

I must say that this album has totally blown me off... To my opinion it's one of Aphrodites best, if not THE best.
I'm no newby in DnB, so take my word and get this album... I've played it to a lot of my friends, and they all really loved it.
My favourite track is probably Ganja Man, but they all trully do kick ass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful...., August 6, 2002

Would you expect any less from Aphrodite? Not me... he's really gotten some big names in hip hop collabing with him on this CD... I'm personally not the biggest fan of rap/hip hop, but that's changing the more they move into the DnB scene.... Between this and Dieselboy, I'm a happy DnB camper.... Damn, track 6 and 7 are just amazing in my humble opinion.... They're all good, but 12 - 14 also really got my boat floating. Buy it ...

4.0 out of 5 stars He's a genius, August 6, 2002

Anyone who has the skills to combine rap, reggae, pop and dnb with this caliber of people deserves major props. Personally, I think this is the best Aphrodite CD to date. It does have a lot of lyrics, but somehow he brings it all together. I don't want to start a battle, but I think this slams Dieselboy's Project Human. It appealed to me probably because of my hip hop upbringing. This will be the future of hip hop as well as DnB. I gave the CD 4 stars because there were so many points he could have blown up my world with this CD. He is a build master, but doesn't make the builds Blow Up like I hoped he would. This is an excellent release. Well worth buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sellout? lol, November 17, 2003

First of all, whoever says this guy's a sellout needs to stop munchin' so much candy and get a musical education. If more DJ's were like Aphro, Dance music would have a much larger crowd.

This is a great mix. I've had it for a while, and continually enjoy it. Yes, there's some hip hop in there, but it works well.

A good investment, but honestly, now that I picked up his 2003 release "Urban Junglist", I like the new Aphro better. Less sci-fi flash, more meaty D'n'B.
