From Booklist

After EMT Lauren Boyer’s partner is killed in their ambulance when a freeway falls during an 8.5 earthquake in San Diego, she, hulky former U.S. Marine Garrett, a pregnant woman, a grandfather, his granddaughter, and two severely injured people set up base in the area around the severed ambulance and the cab of a semi. Through aftershocks, they hunker down in their little caved-in area, fighting off a gang of three prison inmates while trying to come up with an escape or rescue plan. Like a season of Survivor, they must battle problems both large and small: the convicts squander their liquids, then attack to get more, wounding the grandfather; the pregnant girl goes into labor; one of the injured dies, while the other wakes with no memory. As Lauren and Garrett work to keep everyone healthy and calm, even as setbacks develop, they bond. But will what feels like love now last after they are rescued? As the survivors fight for their lives, Sorenson describes everything in stunning detail to create a riveting romantic adventure. --Pat Henshaw

Review

"This goes down as one of the best I've ever read. Bar none."
-New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks on Dangerous to Touch

"(A) high tension romantic thriller...culminating in a page-turning climax. Despite the mystery, the real tension comes from the emotional relationships, full of explosive sex and terrible secrets."
-- Publishers Weekly on Crash Into Me

"It was definitely hot. Sooo hot. Jill Sorenson is my new favorite romantic suspense author!"
-- USA TODAY bestselling author Victoria Dahl on Crash Into Me

After a massive earthquake, few people survive. Trapped in a cave that use to be an underpass, emergency paramedic Lauren Boyer doesn't see much hope for survival. But once she realizes she isn't alone, the instinct to fight to live and help others comes on strong. Garrett aids Lauren in her rescue efforts. While she knows she can trust him and they work together well, she doesn't understand why he seems to also want to keep a distance from her.

When a gang of escaped convicts goes on the attack, Garrett is the sole protector of Lauren and the few other survivors they have found. It's a race to escape and find help before what few supplies they have left run out or before the escaped convicts get restless.

There is definitely a twist to this story that I can't elaborate on without giving away but it's a fun read. I give it a 7 on the steamy scale. (Although parts were a little weird. For instance, as an aftershock hits just after Lauren and Garrett met, he covers her with his body to protect her. I'm not sure I get her 'wow, yummy! this is my favorite position!' thoughts but who knows! Guess it could happen. ???) Suspense is good, it definitely kept my interest. I didn't feel like the plot was predictable. The convicts kept me guessing as to what they would do next. And the events unfolding around them felt realistic as far as the earthquake too. Makes you think...

Overall, pretty good read. I would definitely read more by this author.

Lauren and her paramedic partner Joe have just started their shift in San Diego when an earthquake hits and they're at the epicenter of it. Being on a freeway overpass has them trapped among collapsing freeways, with death and destruction hitting fast and hard. Lauren barely survives but her partner is killed instantly. She comes across Garrett and together they form a camp with a few other survivors, as they're trapped by fallen freeways and concrete. Among the survivors are two wounded adults and Lauren sets up a triage area for their care, a very pregnant young woman and an older man and his young granddaughter. Also close by are three men, all from a work release van, that have escaped and promise to cause all kinds of trouble for Lauren and Garrett's group, who are just trying to find a way to stay alive until help can reach them.

The bulk of the story takes place over the course of about a week, the length of time they're trapped, trying to figure out a way to get help since help isn't coming to them. The situation is gruesome and the scenes were disturbing to read, but fit the reality of their situation. There are bodies that they've laid in a group away from their make shift camp, but at one point not one, but two of the men are forced to hide with the dead, undercover, and are described as having flesh and the stench of the dead on them. Truly, it's disgusting to picture it and I found myself cringing quite a bit.

There are other situations that come up that felt a little over the top in an already highly tense story. The earthquake and its aftermath alone was suspenseful, but add in the convicts who managed to get a gun from one of the guards that died in the quake. One attempts to rape Lauren on night 1 and they're a main source of danger during this week.

Aftershock by Jill Sorenson
4 STARS

It's full of drama, action and scary. The reason its scary is it could happen anywhere anytime. Thier is also romance, heroes and bad guys. Lots of love scenes too.
When I had read the back of the book I wondered how thier could be so much when they were stuck under the freeway after a earthquake. But thier is a big area that is blocked by the 8.5 earthquake interchange in CA.
Lauren Boyer is a emergency paramedic and her partner are on the freeway when the earthquake began parts of the freeway fell. Then a big aftershock came more freeway rose and crashed and her partner was killed.
Thier was alot of death, mangled cars, fires. Lauren hears a voice asking in anyone is alive. Garrett Wright is former Irag veteran. He helps Lauren grab first aid supplies and they look for other survivors.
One of the first they find is Penny a pregnant teenager trapped in the car. Her Aunt did not make it. Penny's baby is due in two weeks.
They find a RV with grandfather Donald Creswell and his grandaughter Cadence. He has some food and water.
Thier is a guy who is in a coma, a women who is badly hurt. They find other supplies in some cars. They find two guys in the back of a pickup drinking beer along with a 3 guy who is hurt.
They stack the dead bodies in a corner covering with a tarp. That night Lauren is asleep when someone attacks her and tries to rape her. Lauren makes enough sound that Garret hears her and is beating the guy up and another guy has a gun and threatens to shoot Lauren if Garret does not let him up.
Garrett feels guilty that Lauren got hurt. He feels he should have told her that they were prisoners that escaped prison van.
That makes two groups and the prisoners have a gun and are not afraid to use it.

In San Diego, paramedics Lauren and Joe respond to an emergency call. However, an earthquake measured at 8.5 on the Richter scale wracks the city. Joe dies and Lauren is buried in a gigantic hole with highway debris including cars above her and thus trapping her inside.

Lauren searches for other trapped survivors and soon meets Iraq war veteran Garrett. With his help, they rescue a pregnant teen, an elderly man and his granddaughter. Three dangerous criminals also survive. Lauren and Garrett set up an emergency operation, but the felons demand the food, water, and medicine.

With a nod to the World Series earthquake and the Stallone movie Daylight, Aftershock is a great thriller that grips readers from the moment the tremor occurs until the final confrontation. The key to the strong storyline is that the romance between the lead couple is palatable but takes a back seat to the survival theme. Readers will appreciate Jill Sorenson's superb tense romantic suspense as the thriller subplot comes across as genuine leaving readers feeling trapped alongside Lauren and Joe under the freeway.
