Powerful, rich and unforgettable,
By dan noyes (New Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aftershock: Poems and Prose of the Vietnam War (Paperback)
Jim Nye's subject matter is the Vietnam war and his poems share what he lived through: terror, camaraderie, sacrifice, humidity, grime and duty. Nye evokes the texture of a war fought long ago. Yet they are timeless poems too. His poems are exorcisms, shrines of memory and in great and sometimes hard poems he writes of experiences most of us are lucky to have avoided. I saw him read his poems once and I will never forget him -an uncommon presence of strength, dignity and humility reading with great honesty and openness the poems in this book. Jim Nye captures that and more in this haunting, rich and powerful book.
