3.0 out of 5 stars Just not for me.....
I was very excited to read this book because it was in my TBR pile for a while. I was finally able to work through some other books to get to this one and it came up short for me. I thought the overall premise was good. I just didn't like the flow of the story. The book was very slow in parts and I didn't particularly enjoy the ending. All of the characters had...

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding!, May 27, 2006
This review is from: Again (Paperback)
Plagued by confusing sensual dreams, Chicago journalist Tyne Jensen desperately needs sleep. Waking night after night upset and unsatisfied is taking its toll. These hazy, erotic visions mix the past and present, but always involve the same mysterious man. When undercurrents of violence permeate her dreams, Tyne becomes truly frightened. Upon meeting architect David Carvelli, she is reminded of someone, but who? David's green eyes and deep voice can't be the ones vexing her dreams, can they?

Haunted by strange carnal dreams of his own, David is likewise drawn to Tyne. While she is interesting and beautiful, that doesn't completely explain his immediate and powerful infatuation with her. As with his dream woman, David is driven to possess and protect Tyne, and the pair are quickly embroiled in a torrid affair. The strength of their feelings are almost too much to endure. They seem destined to flame out. As past tragedies are slowly revealed, the two seem to be reliving them. Are Tyne and David doomed to repeat the past? Can a love that refuses to die get a second chance?

Mixing contemporary, historical, and paranormal elements, Again is an engrossing read. I enjoyed both the modern and historical tales. The realistic, yet dramatic look at interracial relationships in 1897 New York was powerful. Although it played havoc on Tyne and David's lives, I was glad love finally got a second chance. David and Tyne were strong, well developed characters who fit seamlessly into a contemporary urban setting. Together, they positively sizzle! David's decent was riveting. It was clear where he was going, but I was hoping and praying that he would find a way out. At times I was overwhelmed by all the characters, but they add to the depth of the story. Smart, sexy, and suspenseful, Again deftly weaves several interconnected subplots into one spellbinding erotic tale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Until We Meet Again, May 12, 2006
By
Yasmin Coleman (PENNSYLVANIA, USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Again (Paperback)
Again by Sharon Cullars is a satisfying debut novel about romance, loss, love and the past that ties it all together. Alternating between present day and the late 1800s, set against the skyline of New York and the windy city of Chicago, Again tells the story of Tyne Jensen and David Carvelli. After a chance meeting at a wedding, Tyne and David feel as though they have met before but they cannot recall when or where. It is a d?j? vu moment that soon passes but does not alter the strong attraction they feel for each other. The mysterious aura that surrounds them quickly leads them into an intimate situation but once they come up for air, Tyne realizes that her life might be in danger as she recognizes David is the man who has been stalking her in her dreams for the past few months.

Again is an erotic and tantalizing story about a man and woman who relive the past, but are haunted by the present as they struggle to change the outcome of their future...and hope that time will not run out and allow the past to repeat itself...Again. From the intriguing prologue to the strong first few chapters, Again starts off with a bang and was an action-packed, page turner. Unfortunately, it stalled slightly in the middle and lost some of its steam. At other times, there was too much telling rather than showing and the romance theme overshadowed the suspense and paranormal rhythm. Aside from the steamy, tantalizing cover-which attracted my attention and made me pick up the book to read the description-my primary reason for reading Again was because it was touted as a paranormal, suspenseful read. Fortunately, the derailment was not enough to distract from an otherwise entertaining and exciting read. When the pacing picked up, once again I was taken into a world which captivated and reminded me of why I originally selected it. I was quickly turning the pages to see what the final outcome would reveal.

Again by Sharon Cullar is a spellbinding read which is creatively crafted and a refreshing change of pace. If you enjoy romance reads that include a paranormal flair and a touch of suspense then I encourage you to give Again a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this Story!, January 14, 2007
By
This review is from: Again (Paperback)
I just finished this book and I have to say that I was breathless during and after reading it. I had a friend tell me just a couple days before reading or even hearing about this book that he thought that we had been married in a former life. Two days later I find and begin to read this wonderful book. Coincidence? Serendipitous? Could be.... I was captivated by this book. This is the first book that I have ever read cover to cover in 24 hrs. I was so caught up in the story and the build up to the climax that I almost ignored my life for a bit! Great Book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Something different, October 16, 2006

This review is from: Again (Paperback)
I loved the fact that this book combined historical, paranormal, and comtemporary romance featuring a woman of color. I love paranormal romances & have a difficult time finding ones that have characters who are different races. I really enjoyed this book because the author gave readers something different. I look forward to her next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars You'll Definitely Read Again Again, June 4, 2006
This review is from: Again (Paperback)
Again was a surprisingly enjoyable read. Cullars has proven herself as a writer of paranormal fiction. I, in fact, can easily see her becoming the next Octavia Butler.

Again is sort of a time travel piece that jumps back and forth from the late 1800's to present day. In the story, a woman and man meet at a party for the first time, however, there appears to be a sense of familiarity between them. You see, they share a past life, or not. They both have these visions of past episodes (some of them haunting, some of them pleasant). It's basically a supernatural story of love and obsession. In fact, the emphasis is placed more on obsession, I feel, than love.

That's where I had a few problems with it. I would like to have seen the relationships developed more on the parts of both couples, mostly because we needed to know how they got to that point of obsessiveness. There should have been a buid up there, but there wasn't.

However, despite the fact that the story lacked development of the relationship, Again was a great read, and I do plan to read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once in awhile!, May 21, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Again (Paperback)
Once in awhile you read a book that draws you right into the story from the first sentence to the end. This is such a book. It is a paranormal IR involving reincarnation where the story jumps between the events surrounding two people, Rachel and Joseph in the late 1800s and their reincarnated selves, Tyne Jensen and David Carvelli in the present day. Tyne and David were lovers in this past life but the love affair had a fatally tragic ending. Both are having disturbing dreams about this past life that draws them to each other where they become lovers in the present day. But history is trying to repeat itself as past merges with present and the present love affair maybe just as doomed as the previous one.

Ms. Cullars is an excellent writer who brings new depth to the paranormal romance genre with this debut work. The reader has no trouble following the sequencing of events that's happened in the past or the here and now, because the writing is just that good. This story would make a great movie. I will buy her next book but first I've got to read this one again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection..., June 12, 2007
This review is from: Again (Paperback)
Wow! This book hooked me from the first page to the very end. I didn't want it to end but needed it to because I needed to know... Even now after having read it a week or so ago, I still finding myself thinking about the characters, both Rachel and Joseph and Tyne and David. I don't know if I believe in reincarnation but the theory really worked here.

Every minor character had they place in the main story and help to propel the story to it haunting and tragic end!!! Every event, discussion or scene was placed to add depth and character and story progression for the reader to just sit back and enjoy. People didn't discuss anything that didn't relate to the story. There was a party screen that didn't take up three pages describing crystal glasses or the delicate gold inlay pattern on the ceiling. WHO CARES!? Again unless the ceiling is going to fall in on the party goers.. WHO CARES!?

This book reminds me of just how strong love can be. How it can make you do the right thing for the wrong reason and the wrong thing for the right reason.

I would love to read her next book. However, can she do it again? Can perfection be the norm for this writer? I would like to find out. Anyone can come up with a good plot but an excellent storyline in the hands of a highly skilled writer can create perfection. This book is in the category of perfection.

I'll give the author credit. They did keep me highly interested until the end. I thought the storyline was unique and interesting, but the ending just didn't rise to the level as the rest of the story. All in all, it was a good read.
