4.0 out of 5 stars Sex, Sex and more Sex
Listen ladies, if you're reading Susan Johnson for the believable plots and well formed characters, then I think you are not going to want to go here. But if you like sex? steamy sex, quick to the point sex, long drawn out sex, well described and erotic sex, Well then you're not going to be able to put this book down. By the way, as a sidebar, I liked the two main...

3.0 out of 5 stars Erotic romance, April 30, 2002
In 1821 Yorkshire, a snowstorm forces the carriage containing divorcee Caroline Morrison to stop at a nearby inn when she is stunned to see Simon Blair also stranded there. Caroline remembers the great sex with her former lover, but has not forgotten Simon's tryst with her maid. Still Simon seduces Caroline who pleads with him to continue until they both climax. They make love several more times before she sneaks away.

Caroline heads north to her governess job in remote Netherton Castle while Simon searches for her. Ian and Jane Carlisle welcome Caroline to their home and introduce her to their two children. Three days later, a frustrated Simon arrives at Netherton Castle to recover from losing Caroline again. Both Simon and Caroline are shocked to see one another in the middle of nowhere. That night Simon enters Caroline's room and they share great sex, but neither trusts the other outside the bedroom. Thus anything permanent except for an occasional fling seems impossible.

Known for her erotic romances, award winning Susan Johnson uses two astronomical coincidences and a minimal plot to tell the tale of a pair who has no relationship except under the covers. The story line employs explicit sex and reasonably uses profanities in weird ways to further the tension between the lead couple. The tale is too flimsy except for those readers who enjoy sexual escapades from lead characters AGAIN AND AGAIN.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only if you fancy psychopathic misogynist men, October 29, 2006
Ugh! This book was awful. I started reading it a year ago and got so bored and annoyed that I put it back on the shelf. This week I finally bit the bullet, took it down off the shelf again and finished it, but, oh, I wish I hadn't bothered. This was not a good book. It was not even a bearable book. And most importantly of all, it was not a romance book...if you want to read a love story, don't bother with this book at all. Nor was it true erotica, since none of the love scenes were remotely pleasurable or exciting to read nor even the faintest bit realistic.

The hero was REPULSIVE. He was arrogant, nasty and psychopathic. Moreover, he was misogynistic, and I don't think he was ever truly nice to even one woman, apparently vastly preferring the company of men. He slept around, and cast women off like old shoes. Some of those he slept with were after his marriage to the heroine. He didn't seem to care for his wife at all. He gave her horrifying lectures on wifely obedience that seem shocking even for the nineteenth century, telling her that she had to obey him, and threatening her if she didn't. And although the author went to great pains to point out that he was pretty much the most skilled lover of all time...well, he didn't seem to do or know much at all in the boudoir...he seemed to me like a rank amateur. All of these negative attributes made me question the author's assertion that the hero was irresistible to all women. I doubt women would ever be so dumb as to fall for someone like that. I know I wouldn't. He was less appealing than the town oaf, the town pickpocket and the town drunk all rolled into one. Which reminds me, he was also constantly drunk, and in the manner of some problem drinkers spent his time swearing, arguing and threatening women. I hated him! The word 'no' seemed to be an aphrodisiac to him. In almost every love scene in this book, the heroine repeatedly said no to the hero and tried to fight him off or run away. But he went ahead and took her anyway, using lovemaking as a weapon. Uh, isn't that called rape? He kidnapped her, he forced her, he tied her up, and never in a playful, consenting way. That was not romantic, it was not appealing, it was awful. But no matter how repulsive he was, the heroine kept falling for him and putting up with him, which gave me no respect for her either. By the end of the book, the hero hadn't redeemed himself in my eyes; the best he could do was imply that he might be faithful and stick around with his wife from then on in. And yet, that was supposed to be the happy ending, and the epilogue pretty much said that they live happily ever after. Yes, because cheating abusive husbands are always great at suddenly mending their ways and being the best of men from then on! (NOT!)

Besides being boring and having unappealing characters, this book was also absolutely riddled with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. That was constantly annoying! One of my 'favourite' typos was this one: 'One hurtle down -- the marriage was accomplished. Two hurtles left.' Not only is the spelling shot to pieces, but that snippet also reveals the psyche of the hero -- he thinks of marriage as a hurdle to be gotten over and done with. Isn't he charming?

If I had to sum up this book in two words, it would be these: DON'T BOTHER!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money, May 13, 2002
By A Customer
I have read most of Susan Johnson's books and was greatly disappointed in this one. There is no tenderness or affection between the main characters. The male character is a faithless dog who treats the female character like property. It is impossible for any sensible person to understand what these two people see in each other and it's depressing to read about it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to her usual standards., April 30, 2002

I wish SJ would go back to the writing style she built her career on! This book had none of the sexual tension that she built her career on. The story was "blah" too. I skimmed my way through the last third of the book. Another gripe I have is that they (either SJ or the publisher) seemed to have stretched the book out - printing it trade-sized to make it look weightier and then charging more for it. This is becoming a pet peeve of mine. I'm sorry to say that SJ is no longer an auto-buy for me. I'm going to have to wait and see what others say about her upcoming novels before I shell out my money.

1.0 out of 5 stars lots of sex but no plot, May 4, 2002
I really liked Susan Johnson's earlier novels, but lately she's been writing only the soft-porn and leaving out the plots and characterizations. And porn by itself just isn't enough [sort of like eating a whole chocolate pie for breakfast, I guess. You thought it would be fun, but it isn't.] This is another book to browse carefully BEFORE you buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Even the love scenes aren't worth it, October 9, 2004
By
This review is from: Again and Again (Paperback)
I've read a lot of Susan Johnson's novels and this is probably the one I like the least. Even the love scenes couldn't help this one. They were so boring that I ended up "fast forwarding".

I was so irritated with the characters that I didn't make it past the first 10 pages. After two more attempts, I was finally able to finish it. But it was a struggle.

The "hero" of the story was a total, unmitigated jerk. "Hero" would be a misnomer..."anti-hero" would probably be more accurate.

I guess one redeeming fact is that it did prompt a deep emotion in me...namely, I got so mad at the "heroine" I actually shouted out loud "why the h*ll do you want this jerk? why do you keep crawling back to him! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!! So stupid!!!!"

If you're looking for a erotic romance, this isn't it. But if all you care about is sex, sex, and more boring sex, this one is for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed...., March 15, 2003

Im a big SJ fan and have most of her books. But I must say I am very disappointed with her work lately. I kept reading Again and again waiting for the real story to emerge. But alas it never did. Just two people bickering and having sex. After a while all this sex just gets old. Theres no anticipation just details of the act. Im so tired of her characters snipping at each other. Thats not love. Not even close
Wheres the story, the longing, the love???? This book has nothing to recommend it. Unless you want to read nothing but sex acts.
Susan you need to get back to your roots. Taboo, Brazen, Outlaw, and Sliver Flame, now thats good writing

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not what you think!, October 17, 2002

I am a huge fan of SJ. I have read nearly all her books. Of late she has been moving toward the erotic side of romance, and away from the traditional aspects of the genre. If you like steamy, kinky sex scenes this book is for you. I personally enjoyed the book. I gave it 3 stars because I didn't really understand what was going on between Caroline and Simon. I thought she should have delved a little further into their past, but since it is obvious that Caroline was about 12 or 13 when her sexual escapades began. I understand why she stayed away from it. Overall, the book is what it is. It is erotica. I had to join in after reading a couple of the previous reviews. The book wasn't bad. It just isn't erotic romance like her other books. It is pure erotica. Take it or leave it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as her other titles.., May 11, 2002
By A Customer
The biggest flaw I found in this particular book was the violence between the two main characters, Simon and Caroline. It appeared that every time these two came together, there was slapping and verbal abuse toward the other. This kind of turned me off from what little romance Ms. Johnson was trying to accomplish between the two. I can understand Caro's reluctance to get involved with Simon after his indiscretion five years earlier but when she did decide to "bed" him again, she turned wishy washy and verbally abuse toward him. There was too much bitterness and mistrust between the lead characters to really believe in any kind of romance or happily ever after for them. I hope Ms.Johnson's next book will give us the sensuality and romance that she is famous for.
