Book Description

Reincarnation sucks! Unless it comes with a cute guy. That’s what sixteen year-old Layla Bradford discovers when she moves to Sky Cove, Maine, a small-town she thought was ordinary, but turns out to be an episode of “Cold Case” on steroids.

Layla doesn’t want to fit in; she wants to blend in and stay out of the spotlight. But the spotlight is where she winds up when she catches the eye of school cross-country star and all-around-nice-guy Lucas Ellis. She quickly learns there’s more at stake than high school reputations when she and Lucas discover they are the reincarnations of a young married couple from the mid-1800s who suffered a horrible tragedy at the hands of a madman who was never brought to justice. After a series of frightening visions show Layla and Lucas glimpses of their past-lives, they realize that the villain of their previous existence has also been reincarnated, in the form of a fellow high school student who targets them with teenage pranks that soon turn dangerous. As they grow closer, will Layla and Lucas be able to uncover the truth in time to stop the same tragedy from unfolding once again?

About the Author

Amy Durham discovered her love of writing in the sixth grade. What began as a love of writing poetry soon turned into stories scribbled into school notebooks. In the eighth grade, her English teacher told her she was good at it and encouraged her to continue to put pen to paper. At that moment, the die was cast, and writing would forever be a part of her life. As an adult, Amy focuses her efforts on writing Young Adult Fiction... adventure, romance, and life-lessons... woven together as imagination and escape for young readers. Amy holds a firm belief that books are not only entertaining, but have the ability to transform young lives. A book can educate. A book can teach compassion and kindness. A book can spark interest. A book can be a companion. Simply put, books can accompany and guide young readers as they try to navigate their way through the twisted, confusing roads of adolescence. She lives in Kentucky, where she is a middle school teacher. She and her husband are raising three wild, intelligent, and creative boys, giving her plenty of fodder for the love and adventure she enjoys putting in her stories!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean, entertaining, page-turner June 26, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I loved this book and found it to be hard to put down at times. I agree with a couple of the other reviewers that compare it to the Twilight series, in the fact that it is written in the first person with a degree of supernatural. Yet, please don't make the mistake of assuming that it will be a copy-cat version. Mrs. Durham's characters are strong and stand very well on their own. Since this is a book in the category of "young adult fiction," I was very pleased and appreciative of the clean nature of the book. The characters are very much attracted to each other, however, the decisions that they make would not leave a mother too ashamed to pass this title on to her teenage daughter. Kudos to Amy Durham on the first of what will surely be a great series of books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Dead Again This Time...Hopefully August 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Finished this book in a day. Very, very cool. The main characters, Layla and Luke are very likeable, smart and real. You kind of figure out the ending, and you know what? It's a nice feeling. Because these two just deserve that second at spending their lives together - they're whole lives this time. Ms. Durham has a great way with dialogue, and everyone comes off as believable. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the sequel. Kudos!

3.0 out of 5 stars Once Again (Sky Cove Series) January 18, 2013

Review originally posted at Romancing the Book

Once Again is a nice mix of fantasy and romance. It showed how unconditional love lasts even in another life.

The main characters are very likable. But I think they're both too good to be true. I just wish they weren't perfect; that they should have something to improve on. I know it's a fantasy novel but I just wanted some unpredictability. They were just TOO perfect. How the romance started was too fast but a bit understandable as to why. It took me sometime to be convinced that their feelings, especially that Lucas' feelings are genuine.

Another issue I had is that the building of suspense was so long that it took 90% of the book and when it came down to the revelation part, it went in a blur. My reaction was, "That was it?"

Despite those, I still liked the flow of the story, it wasn't confusing at all. Another good thing about it is that the mystery part was very intriguing which made me eager to finish the book. I already had an idea who was the "bad" guy, and I was right!

Overall, I enjoyed the book! It has a good story and I'm glad I have taken a journey with Layla and Lucas.

Nicely written! Engaging plot. It's written along the lines of the Twilight books;first person, a taste of the supernatural, but very different. I can't wait for the next one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Four and a half stars. July 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I absolutely loved this book. The characters were well-developed, the writing was excellent and the plot was fantastic. It's all-together a really nice creative book. I wanted to give it four and a half stars, but I couldn't. It lost a star for this simple reason: I knew who the villain was before it was revealed. I wish I had been blown off my feet when the villain's identity was shown, but I wasn't. That frustrated me enough to take away a star, but otherwise, this book is fantastic. I definitely recommend it. It's a nice, refreshing, quick read.

Saw this book advertised in the local newspaper and decided to give it a shot. Loved the story, and the "fast pace" of the book. Usually not a young adult fiction fan, but I really enjoyed this one. I'm looking forward to reading the second installment of the Sky Cove series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Start to a Series January 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Amy Durham has a wonderful beginning for this series. I'm eager to read the next book. Durham has a distinctive and sensitive way of writing first person. She puts you right in Layla's head and her reactions to being the new girl at school and the PAST love of the most popular boy at Sky Cove High School, Lucas Ellis. The story is fast paced and very entertaining. And the paranormal elements drive the story well. I highly recommend it.

I loved the fast paced reading pleasure I got from this book. It didn't make their past seem so far fetched. I think it captured the feelings of angst and teenage love perfectly. The ending was believable. As was the whole book.

More About the Author

After spending every work day with classrooms full of tweens and teens, then going home to three boys of her own, two of whom fall into the tween/teen category, you'd think that Amy Durham might like to leave the world of teenagers behind. Not so!

Instead, she spends her spare moments - which sometimes consist of waiting twenty minutes for her oldest kiddo to get out of band practice - with her laptop and a multitude of teenage characters trying to navigate their way through the twisted, difficult road of adolescence.

You might ask... "Why Young Adult Fiction"? Well, because it's what she knows. As a teacher and a parent, Amy is around tweens and teens on an almost constant basis. And while it's true they can be - ahem - challenging, they are also full of life, vision, and dreams. And that's a really cool place to be.

Young Adult Fiction allows young readers the opportunity to find hope for the situations they find themselves in, find determination to keep on going, and courage to pursue their dreams. It also allows adult readers the chance to revisit the exuberance of youth, remember the joy and poignancy of first love, and recall how it felt to dream with abandon.

Amy Durham is a wife and mother, an author, a teacher, an avid reader, and a musician. If she wasn't writing books, she'd be a celebrity chef!
