This review is from: Against All Odds (Audio CD)
The title track should have been Hyphy 101, where as this album could teach even the most inexperienced of rap listeners to distinguish the difference between real hip hop and the amateurs. This is a bad stab at hip hop. I was first sold this CD by DC himself at a SJSU function and I can't believe I was duped into buying it. There's a lot of up and coming rappers coming out of the bay area, trying to make a name for the themselves and DC gives them a bad one. Being a hyphy fan, I found this album offensive to the movement.
The album feels long, melodramatic at times and seemingly close to a work of fiction by someone trying too hard to be hard. "Where we From" may qualify as being one of the worst songs I've ever heard! There's also an odd sound to his rapping on songs like "How We Roll" in which DC sings the title with a ring of slight retardation in his voice. Songs like "They keep comin' back", in which we see DC struggle with being a player, and "Make ya feel good" are laughable yet painful to listen to. The gods must have smiled upon him when bay area rapper Celly Cel recorded a duet with him on the only decent/radio friendly song "In the Bay". Celly Cel practically carries the song with DC basically doing back up vocals. You might as well save your money since that same song appears on Celly Cel's "Slaps, Staps, and Baseball Caps" album (a personal favorite of mine). To top off the money you get robbed of, the album comes with a DVD featuring the six foot something, pimpled face rapper begging bay area hip hop greats like AP.9 to pimp him, just so the viewers won't feel too cheated about buying the album. As well as interviews you wouldn't give a crap about. DON'T BUY THIS ALBUM unless you see it hovering above a bin with a 99 cent sticker on it. This is a cheap representation of Bay Area Hip Hop. I just hope his "Will Smith-like" October release will be a huge step up from this.

Great Bay Area Album,

This is one of the most well rounded Bay Area albums to come out in a long time. The cd has a lil somethin for everyone and slaps all the way through. The cd is packed with features from huge bay area rappers and comes with a bonus DVD that has way too many artists in it to name (but it has Ice Cube, WC, Youngbloodz and Mistah FAB just to name a few). Buy this album and ones like it to help support the future of bay area rap, you won't be disappointed.
