Editorial Reviews

Review

". . .the book is so filled with anecdotes and revealing reflections on what draws Ayres and motorcyclists like him to endurance riding that readers may have a hard time putting it down.  There is a passage near the end of the book where Ayres reaches the top of a mountain pass in the middle of the night and pulls over to wonder at the starry panorama before him.  I think any kind of motorcyclist doing any kind of riding can relate to those kind of singular moments which make all the heat, the cold, and the special risks of motorcycling worth it." - Ron Davis, BMW Owners News

About the Author

Ron Ayres is a nationally recognized motorcycle endurance rider who has completed numerous endurance competitions, including two Iron Butt rallies. His first book, Against the Wind, chronicles his participation in the 1995 Iron Butt Rally, which he finished in sixth place after riding more than 12,000 miles in eleven days. Against the Wind has been widely acclaimed among motorcyclists and non-riders alike and is now in its third printing.

In 1998, Ron shattered a Guinness World Record when he visited all 48 contiguous states by motorcycle in just six days. After completing his 48-state journey in Washington, he continued to Hyder, Alaska, and set a record as the first motorcyclist to visit all 49 North American states in seven days.

In 1999, Ron and his wife Barbara relocated to Johannesburg, South Africa. Ron is Chief Executive Officer of EDS Africa, a global firm which provides information technology services to companies in sub-Saharan Africa. Ron continues his motorcycle adventures in Africa. In March 2000, he and South African rider Shaun Powell will lead a group of experienced motorcyclists on an "8 Flags" ride through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Mozambique. His e-mail address is ron@ronayres.com.

Ayers' first book, Against the Wind, is a thoughtful, well written travelogue that provides readers with fascinating insights into long-distance motorcycling--and one man's psyche. Against the Clock is none of that. This is a superfical hour-by-hour laundry list of what happened. During hour 456 deer number 38 crossed the road in front of me. On hour 675 I stopped for gas. This sort of prose is not just lacking in description, but totally uninteresting! Ron, it is the story behind the story that carries the narrative. This could have been a great book, but falls far short of that goal.

As good as Ron is at setting motorcycle endurance records, he is in a class by himself when it comes to successfully engaging the reader's interest in his travels and experiences on the road. Note to Peter Matthiessen, "Watch out!"
This is a great read for enthusiasts and arm chair endurance riders alike. I highly recommend "Against the Clock".

Not of the same caliber "Against the wind" was (5 star !). I think the author goes out of his way to thank the long distance riding community but it just isn't that great of a read.

I have all of Ron's books. His first (Against the Wind) is the apex of the lot but "Against the Clock" is engaging and entertaining; worth the cost of entry. I followed Ron's exploits as he was doing the ride; reading reports from his "home base" (family) as well as those who met him at stops along the way (some of their photos are included in this book). While reading this book the shouts of, "Go, Ron. GO!!!", ring in my head as they did while the ride was taking place.
