Editorial Reviews

Review

"Is My Butt Still Attached? Ron Ayres wears a funny helmet, but he also rides his damned motorcycle till the wheels fall off! Ron's first Iron Butt adventure was chronicled in his book Against the Wind. Now, he's back to do the impossible, namely to shatter the Guinness Record for riding through 48 contiguous states in six days and 31 minutes. He did them one better by riding his motorcycle to Alaska on the 7th day. It's one helluva ride and a great read." Easyriders March 2000 -- Easyriders March 2000

"Your effort in writing about the 7/49 is to the motorcycling world and long distance endurance riding community what Sammy Sosa's hitting efforts are to baseball . . . two back-to-back years (books in your case) of surpassing all others in your chosen fields.

"Sammy, 1st in baseball with two consecutive 60 home-run years. Ron Ayres with two consecutive home runs in publishing with what remains, in this reader's view, as two of the greatest books written on the subject of long distance endurance riding. This would be enough, but you have an ability to capture not only that which relates to long distance riding, but all that is wondrous about motorcycling in general as it relates to its effect on the human spirit, and the spirit of everyman/every rider. -- Mike Pecora

2.0 out of 5 stars Ayres should have stopped with Against the Wind, March 8, 2004

This review is from: Against the Clock: The incredible story of the 7/49 (Paperback)
Ayers' first book, Against the Wind, is a thoughtful, well written travelogue that provides readers with fascinating insights into long-distance motorcycling--and one man's psyche. Against the Clock is none of that. This is a superfical hour-by-hour laundry list of what happened. During hour 456 deer number 38 crossed the road in front of me. On hour 675 I stopped for gas. This sort of prose is not just lacking in description, but totally uninteresting! Ron, it is the story behind the story that carries the narrative. This could have been a great book, but falls far short of that goal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended for Soothing Walter Mitty Streaks, December 13, 1999

As good as Ron is at setting motorcycle endurance records, he is in a class by himself when it comes to successfully engaging the reader's interest in his travels and experiences on the road. Note to Peter Matthiessen, "Watch out!"

This is a great read for enthusiasts and arm chair endurance riders alike. I highly recommend "Against the Clock".

3.0 out of 5 stars 1st book much better, August 18, 2000

This review is from: Against the Clock: The incredible story of the 7/49 (Paperback)
Not of the same caliber "Against the wind" was (5 star !). I think the author goes out of his way to thank the long distance riding community but it just isn't that great of a read.
