As a student of the 1960's, this essay collection is a really wonderful asset. Sontag, in New York, was at the center of a phenomenal cultural change in the arts. Most people have forgotten about or never learned about seminal figures such as Jack Smith, but Sontag deals with him, as well as Happenings, surrealism, and John Cage, from a decidedly francophile perspective. Well worth the time spent.

This is the book that started it all. It is the epitome of what great thinking can be. I never cease to learn from it.

I enjoyed this better then On Photography, which I do like a lot. She's all the more impressive as a critic when she doesn't restrict herself to writing a prolonged analysis of one subject. The different sections here tend to be organized along mediums of expression rather than themes. She touches on everything from the relationship to style and form, the role that suffering supposedly plays in the creation of art, corny science fiction films, book reviews, denouncements of pretty much the entirety of American Theater in the mid-twentieth century, not to mention forming a brilliant account that both examines and justifies the need for camp sensibilities in modern art. I think she's too quick to dismiss some people (she describes Virginia Woolf as a minor writer and Sherwood Anderson as cutesy, which seems pretty damn unfair considering their respective works) Her writings on theatre also tend to be a lot less polished and derivative than when she examines literature or film. But overall this is a really strong collection which proves how versatile she is.

This may be Sontag's most rigorous and important collection of essays, complete with topics ranging from Levi-Strauss to Godard. In it is her famous essay "On Camp," which would later make her a superstar in the New York artistic community.

Sontag is worried about intellectual interpretation, the erudite and narrow approach to understanding a work of art. She calls on us to "show how it is what it is, even that it is what it is, rather than to show what it means." Her approach is far reaching and yet acute and highly attuned to the intellectual aspects of the fine arts.

This collection includes fabulous essays on Sartre, Bresson, Beckett, Lukacs, Resnais, and many others. It is evidence of her astonishing ability to think seriously and with tremendous beauty about that which is most important.
