Sample Free Goodness, October 26, 2011
I really never thought the Rock/Rap genre would take root or become as famous as it is. I always liked the sample free rap environment provided by songs like Run DMC's King Of Rock (
King of Rock) and Fugitive by Whodini (
Back in Black), two songs that utilized live bands and were both highlights of both albums (I have always loved the guitar and cowbell in King of Rock). Rage Against the Machine's albums defy convention in so many ways. Their music is so cool and I have always considered them as a call to arms.
The politically charged lyrics are matched by the vibe only an electric guitar, bass and drums can provide. Darkness from the Crow soundtrack was the first RATM song I heard and Evil Empire was the first full RATM album I listened to, but their self titled debut will always be my favorite album.
Don't get me wrong, I own the
Judgment Night: Music From The Motion Picture soundtrack album, which in itself was a great collection of the fusion of Rock and Rap, but I don't think any of those collaborations come close to the juggernaut RATM is.
I'm glad I purchased this box set, because it makes it easier to sum up a three album review in one shot. I feel to save space it would be better to rate each song individually:

one of my favorites, April 14, 2010
one of my favorites! and you get three for about the price of one. I keep some "RATM" ready to play at all times. They are all great, similiar in style, but I prefer the one with the cover of the burning monk.
