Book Description

August 30, 1997 0275958779 978-0275958770
This is a pioneering work, timely, scholarly, and grounded in critical-sociological, anthropological, and philosophical traditions. It offers an empathic analysis of pluralist, Afrocentric, and postmodernist advocacies of multicultural education and multiculturalism, but reveals formidable flaws in their conceptions of gender, race, culture, knowledge, learning, and social change. It is required reading for those desiring a synopsis of the literature on multicultural education and multiculturalism, and an understanding of the disputes among the various schools of thought. The author claims that multiculturalism is not a remedy for problems of sexism, racism, and educational underachievement among "ethnic minorities." Rather, so questionable is multiculturalism's endorsement of biological classifications, so relativistic and moralistic are its arguments on cultural differences, and so negligent its analysis of human reasoning that it has become a political pawn. Read Against the Multicultural Agenda to discover what is wrong with the multicultural agenda and what is powerfully persuasive about the alternative--critical thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and sorely needed in our Colleges today, June 30, 2009
This review is from: Against the Multicultural Agenda: A Critical Thinking Alternative (Paperback)
Mr. Webster creates an articulate and insightful exploration of the Left-wing agenda in our university system today. His thesis is well laid out and easy to understand for the intelligent reader. Mr. Webster uses critical thinking skills to disarm and deconstruct old arguements that when illuminated by the light of reason, quickly fall apart. I highly recommend this book for any college Diversity course or for those who want to understand the so-called multi-cultural agenda.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very difficult read, November 16, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Against the Multicultural Agenda: A Critical Thinking Alternative (Paperback)
I bought this book because it was required reading for a college course. I am an avid reader and have read many difficult texts, but this book was very poorly written and hard to wade my way through. The basic concept of the book is that Webster believes that critical thinking should be taught in schools. If this is a required book for you, just take that concept and run, because when you read the book you many not get that. Webster spends too much time talking about details of his personal options that are difficult to pull together in a understandable way.

My advise don't buy it if you don't have to.
