5.0 out of 5 stars The only one, October 6, 2000
This review is from: Against Multiple Unarmed Assailants (Practical Karate) (Bk.3) (Paperback)
This book is one of the most interesting and important in this six-book series, as it is the only work I've ever seen devoted exclusively to the subject of defense against multiple assailants. The author presents a large number of scenarios and their variations and how to defend against them. There is good coverage on the different types of situations. For example, the author shows several situations where you are being held by two people while the third attacks, or where your hands are even tied, forcing you to use your feet to block and strike.

I think a book on this subject makes a lot of sense. From my long experience as both a student and an instructor in a number of different martial arts, multiple attacker defenses are uniformly neglected in training in the schools. This book helps to make up for this oversight. Altogether an excellent book on a frequently neglected area of training.

3.0 out of 5 stars A basic guide on using karate when attacked by multiple subjects., June 11, 2009

This review is from: Against Multiple Unarmed Assailants (Practical Karate) (Bk.3) (Paperback)
The are six volumes in this practical karate series. This volume (3) shows various responses against multiple subject attacks. One thing should be made clear, and the authors emphasize this fact, defending against multiple attackers is not easy. Even karate practitioners with years of practice will have trouble defending against multiple attackers. The value of this volume is that it shows the numerous approaches one can use if attacked by more than one person. In conclusion, this is an excellent guide when used in combination with karate training under a competent instructor.

This is a good book on a neglected subject. Over the years (since ca. 1973)in many dojos & dojangs, I have often heard mention of defenses vs. multiple attackers, but have rarely seen any demonstrated, much less taught. Profs. Nakayama & Draeger took the time to think about how karate could be applied to such situations; their efforts were worthwhile. If you are interested in self-defense, buy this book.
